Description

Position Summary: This position is responsible Oversees swine grow-finish production of managed companies and relationships of Passel Farms, as directed by the Wean to Finish System Manager, ensuring that swine production is executed in accordance with protocols and procedures established by management.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Directs and participates in the execution of protocols and procedures necessary for successful grow-finish management, which includes: sorting, feeding and watering, health treatments, ventilation, facility/site maintenance and environment, transportation, bio-security, and pig monitoring and care.
  • Assists in initial count, sort, and grading of pigs arriving to ensure pigs are sorted correctly according to size and health and approving/adjusting health and feeding plan.
  • Monitors pig performance in facilities to identify and approve any necessary adjustments to health and feeding plan to meet pig flow requirements (i.e. health challenges requiring special treatments and/or nutrition adjustments).
  • Performs diagnostic work where necessary and appropriate. Involves necessary consultation from Standard Company nutritionist and approved veterinarians.
  • Maintains communication and relationship with approved veterinarians assisting in herd health protocols and diagnostics.
  • Assists in marketing of pigs by marking and communicating to coordinator pigs ready for market, based on weight, packer, and pig flow.
  • Approves facilities for pig arrivals.
  • Oversees and evaluates employees and/or contract growers within managed pig flows identifying opportunities for training and development.
  • Assists in development of swine production protocols and procedures approved by Management for promotion of acceptable animal husbandry practices and pig flow management.
  • Ensure timely and accurate reporting of information from sites/facilities related to pig flows, necessary for financial/operational analysis and management. (i.e. inventories, death loss, pig movements, pit levels, LP levels, water usage, med usage, etc.)
  • Creates a positive work environment for co-workers by example.
  • Ensures staffing levels are appropriate and required positions are staffed with qualified employees.
  • Provides input on staffing requirements, wage levels, and other employment matters.
  • Maintains PQA+ certification.
  • Completes safety training timely.
  • Follows all Animal Welfare policies and practices and informs management of any violations by staff.
  • Follows bio-security measures according to Bio-Security Policy, including animal movement, visitor access, sanitation, and disease prevention measures.
  • Follows all safety rules and practices and ensures others do the same.
  • Supports, promotes, and adheres to policies, procedures, and values of Passel Farms and industry standards.
  • Regular, punctual and consistent attendance is essential for this position.
  • Other duties as may be assigned to fulfill responsibilities of this position and support team goals.

Requirements

Qualification: 5 years of more of livestock production experience with some college or technical schooling preferred. Bilingual proficiency preferred. Able to work with a variety of personalities and live animals. A qualifying insurable driver’s license must be maintained to drive on behalf of the company. The company provided vehicle is for business purposes only. A personal cell phone is required with a monthly reimbursement stipend set by the company.

Physical Requirements: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. While performing the duties of this job, employees are regularly required to stand, walk and able to be on feet while on concrete; talk or hear, both in person and by telephone; use hands repetitively to finger, handle, feel or operate equipment; reach with hands and the employee must regularly be able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Must be able to move and work with live animals of various sizes.

Work Environment: This position will generally take place in swine facilities in rural areas. Hours of work are generally scheduled around good livestock husbandry needs as well as during regular business hours. This position requires the ability to respond to animal needs and does include non-traditional hours, weekends, or holidays based on production schedules and operational needs. Hours average 50 hours a week. There will be some variation in work hours due to animal care and health, weather, employee shift schedules, special projects, and other concerns. Noise levels that require hearing protection in some areas.
