CLASS SUMMARY
Responsible for skilled welding and fabrication work in the repair of parts and equipment and fabrication of articles.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
• Cuts, fits, and welds metal. Lays-out and welds light and heavy gauge sheet metals.
• Brazes and makes repairs on heavy equipment.
• Reads blueprints in laying out work and fabricates various metal fixtures. Assists with airfield gate
repairs or replacing worn parts to maintain functionality of gates as needed.
• Inventories and orders welding supplies and various types of metals as needed.
• Responds to airport emergencies as needed. Operates all snow equipment and communicates on
the airfield and with co-workers in high stress situations.
• Programming and operation of plasma cutting table.
• Design and produce new parts for various types of equipment and projects.
• Collaborate work with metal sheets and perform various installations.
• Determine the appropriate welding equipment or method based on requirements.
• Set up components for welding according to specifications.
• Forklift and various types of heavy equipment operation.
• Makes emergency repairs out of the shop in all elements of weather.
• Maintains record of repairs made, parts, and time worked.
• Assist and perform mechanical repairs and serve work with mechanics.
• Distinguish between various types of metals including, high carbon steel, aluminum, cast iron,
mild steel, and stainless steel to complete the job.
Performs other duties of a similar nature and level as assigned.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
Minimum Education: HSD/GED
Minimum Years of Direct Experience: 5 Welder/fabricator experience
Or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the
essential duties of the job such as those listed above.
LICENSING/CERTIFICATIONS
Required
• Commercial Driver’s License – Class A (or the ability to acquire a Class A within 6 months of the
hire date)
• Security Identification Display Area Clearance (SIDA)
• Valid Driver’s license
Airfield Driving
This position requires driving on the airfield and airfield ramps.
DEMONSTRATED SKILL IN
• Use of a variety of computer-based technologies including word processing, and spreadsheets.
• Establish and maintain effective, fair, cooperative, collaborative, and respectful relationships with
internal and external colleagues, peers, work teams and workgroups.
• Operating electric and acetylene welding equipment within prescribe tolerance.
• Use of blueprints, rough sketches, and samples.
• Strong problem-solving skills that recognize, resolve, and/or escalate problems within a very
narrow scope.
• Strong decision making skills to have ability to receive general guidance of issues to properly
repair or re-build for any equipment or project.
DEMONSTRATED KNOWLEDGE OF
• Methods, materials, and terminology of the welding trade.
• Proper temperatures for tempering metals.
• Electric and acetylene properties of metals
• OSHA Standards, Airfield and FAA Regulations.
