The WIC Nutrition Assistant II (WNA II) & Breastfeeding Peer Counselor (BFPC) is responsible for coordinating both the WIC Program and the WIC BFPC Program services in accordance with USDA standards. Responsible for recruiting and managing a caseload of BFPC program participants and providing peer support through established counseling guidelines. Determine WIC eligibility and complete certification, provide nutrition and breastfeeding education, issue benefits and make referrals. Follow TrueCare, WIC and BFPC policies and procedures.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Incorporate TC Building Great Relationships (BGR) standards in all interactions.
- Interview applicants to determine WIC program eligibility based on state guidelines pertaining to nutritional assessment, income, residence status and medical information.
- Teach nutrition and breastfeeding classes according to agency lesson plans.
- Assess the nutritional adequacy of participants’ diets and refer possible high-risk participants to appropriate staff.
- Provide low-risk nutrition and breastfeeding counseling to participants using Participant Centered Education (PCE) principals and techniques.
- Create nutrition education follow-up plans for participants and electronically document summaries of appointments.
- Prescribe food package and issue food benefits using the California e-WIC debit card. Maintain e-WIC card security.
- Recruit prenatal participants who intend to breastfeed to the BFPC Program and maintain designated caseload.
- Develop relationship, build rapport, and effectively communicate with the BFPC moms to encourage and support exclusive breastfeeding efforts.
- Follow BFPC counseling guidelines and make contacts at designated intervals during the pregnancy and postpartum periods.
- Thoroughly assess breastfeeding progress and address all questions and concerns, refer to IBCLC as needed.
- Appropriately document contacts in CA WIC’s Statewide Database (WIC WISE) and the BFPC Database.
- Promote breastfeeding as the recommended method of infant feeding.
- Provide referrals to other health-related programs and social services.
- Support WIC Program Administration by assisting with workgroups, outreach, and other assignments. Assist with caseload maintenance activities.
- Participate in ongoing education and training.
Required Qualifications:- Associate degree in nutrition, health or equivalent work experience.
- Minimum 6 months WIC program experience.
- Minimum 6 months of experience as a Nutrition Assistant II.
- Has successfully breastfed at least one baby.
- Completion of the WIC Nutrition Assistant Certification Training.
- Strong Knowledge of WIC foods and WIC policies.
- Computer proficiency, particularly with data entry and the Microsoft Office suite, including Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
- Must have reliable transportation for travel to trainings and meetings, as needed.
Desired Qualifications:- Bachelor’s degree in business administration, public health, or related field.
- Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Training Program.
- Knowledge of the WIC program and maternal child health.
- Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.
The pay range for this role is $21 - $29 on an hourly basis.
