Wound And Ostomy Care Nurse (PRN) Nursing Administration

Essential Functions

Serves as primary educator for all patients undergoing ostomy surgery. Assess ostomy patients returning to the hospital regarding: (a) at-home management of ostomy; (b) knowledge level regarding ostomy care; (c) problems in ostomy management of psychosocial rehabilitation.

Provides consultation and direct assistance to nursing staff in the management of patients with altered skin integrity secondary to drainage or pressure necrosis. Assists staff in maintaining current knowledge and competence in the areas of ostomy care, draining wound management, and skin care. Helps with analysis of stock items and mattresses and makes recommendations to supply chain regarding equipment for ostomy, wound, and skin care. Participates in the data collection for research studies involving pressure sores, incontinence and ostomy diversions.

Required Education/Experience  

• Graduate from an accredited registered nursing program


• Must possess a valid South Carolina or compact (multi-state) RN license.


• Active Basic Life Support certification, as well as additional certifications per unit requirements


• Certified in wound care within 2 years (WOCN or WCC)
