Job Summary:
The W/R Senior Utility Worker is responsible for performing lead work as a member of a crew engaged in activities related to the water distribution and sanitary sewer systems’ construction, maintenance, and rehabilitation. This role involves leading and participating in the work of subordinate workers and assisting the crew leader/supervisor in overseeing a crew. The W/R Senior Utility Worker also performs crew leader duties in the supervisor’s absence. Responsibilities include installing, maintaining, and repairing water and sanitary sewer lines, services, valves, fire hydrants, commercial/industrial meter vaults and piping, manholes, and other related water and wastewater system assets. The role also involves assisting in performing flow tests and pressure monitoring equipment, entering manholes, sewer pipes, meter vaults, and other confined spaces, assisting the collection system inspector in evaluating the collection system for Inflow and Infiltration (I&I) as well as structural integrity, assisting in the operation of sewer video inspection and related equipment, measuring the depth and sizes of manholes and pipes, and operating heavy machinery such as rubber tire back-hoe/loader, bush hog, dump trucks, sewer jet/vacuum truck/equipment, and vehicles. The W/R Senior Utility Worker may interact with customers and the general public while performing required duties. The position operates under general supervision, in accordance with established policies and procedures. Extended hours, weekends, and on-call/call-back availability are required. Work hours are subject to change. Performs related work as required.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Leads and participates in the work of subordinate workers.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Adheres to safety rules; operates and maintains assigned equipment safely and efficiently; no lost time accidents occur.
  • Responds to customer’s (internal and/or external) concerns and complaints in a professional and timely manner; refers concerns and complaints to supervisor, when appropriate; maintains composure at all times.
  • Assumes responsibility for personal productivity and quality of work; recognizes and communicates problems and suggests solutions to supervisor.
  • Carries out directions; follows through and completes assignments in acceptable time frames; applies technical and procedural know-how to get the job done in an acceptable manner; adjusts behavior for the effective use of time and resources.
  • Effectively supports co-workers in establishing and achieving objectives while showing courtesy and respect toward others.
  • Assumes responsibility for managing personal time, schedules, and deadlines; advises supervisor of any conflict which may inhibit departmental/unit/section obligations; observes established rules and policies.
  • Communicates ideas and information for improving production, procedures, and cost control.
  • Coordinates time off and time away from work site with immediate supervisor to minimize disruptions to the unit, crew, section, or department.
  • Takes initiative to accomplish goals; demonstrates ability to learn on the job; maintains appropriate skills for the position.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Good knowledge of safety rules, regulations, procedures, principles, and practices involved in the construction, maintenance, and repair of water/sewer utility lines, structures, and appurtenances.
  • Good knowledge of the tools, materials, and equipment used in the installation, maintenance, repair, and replacement of water/sewer utility lines, structures, and appurtenances.
  • Ability to operate sewer/video inspection and locating equipment.
  • Good knowledge of municipal water and sewer service policies and procedures.
  • Ability to read and interpret drawings, plans, and maps.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain records.
  • Skill in using and operating manual/power tools, specialized, and heavy equipment.
  • Ability to enter confined spaces.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of officials, contractors, employees, and the public.

Education and Experience:

  • Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma.
  • A minimum of one year of experience in construction/maintenance related utility work.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces.

 

GRADE 405 $20.95-$27.59-$34.23
