Job Description - Yacht Club Sailing Instructor

Position Title: Sailing Instructor


Department: Sailing


Division: Athletics


Reports to: Sailing Manager, Sailing Captain


Supervises: None

Position Summary: The position of Sailing Instructor is responsible for instructing members and their children on proper sailing procedures, ensuring the proper maintenance of sailboats, and overseeing the upkeep of dock facilities. Work will primarily be conducted outdoors, with exposure to varying weather conditions.


 


Employment Status: Most new and returning employees will be hired under a seasonal employment status. Most seasonal employees can expect a consistent schedule from (approximately) April to October each year. At the end of each season, employees are welcome to submit requests to transition to either year-round part-time or full-time status. The approval of these requests will be based on the needs of the Club and the employee's performance track record.


 


Qualifications:



  • High school diploma or equivalent experience preferred

  • Three or more years of experience in a similar position preferred

  • CPR/First Aid Certification required

  • Ability to work scheduled hours, including holidays and weekends when necessary

  • Ability to lift 50 lbs

  • Lifting, bending, twisting, reaching, crouching, and crawling throughout the course of the job

  • Being on your feet for an extended period of time


 


Duties:



  • Serves as a positive role model by:

    • Adhering to the same standards of service and behavior that peers are required to uphold

    • Demonstrating effective communication skills through various digital platforms utilized by the Club

    • Maintaining a positive and friendly demeanor at all times

    • Working with peers to meet the needs of the team

    • Representing the Club well in its relationships with members and vendors




 



  • Continually provides services in the areas of:

    • Providing group and private sailing instruction, as directed by the Sailing Director, at all levels

    • Educating students on the proper terminology of spars and rigging, along with the purposes and function of each part

    • Developing and overseeing seaman-like discipline on the water, including safe boat handling and proper care

    • Supervising weekly races following the curriculum established by the Sailing Director

    • Supporting the organization of Sunday Sails, evening races, regattas, and other excursions

    • Communicating important weather information and student learning progress to parents

    • Maintaining accurate records of attendance, injuries, and boat damage

    • Leading, organizing, prioritizing, and delegating tasks effectively

    • Continuously seeking to enhance knowledge and skills

    • Demonstrating self-awareness concerning members’, management, and peers

    • Powerboat experience preferred

    • US Sailing Level 1 Certification preferred

    • Knowledge of and ability to perform the required role in emergency situations




 



  • Assumes responsibility for the department by:

    • Assisting supervisors in maintaining proper inventory levels

    • Aiding in the maintenance of boats and the facilities

    • Maintaining boat storage facilities in a safe and organized manner

    • Communicating with supervisors and peers concerning ongoing projects




 



  • Results on which performance will be evaluated but are not limited to:

    • Being attentive to the needs of the members

    • General behavior and language

    • Maintaining good hygiene and professional appearance
