The Yard Hostler Driver is responsible for safely and efficiently moving trailers and containers within the yard and between loading docks, staging areas, and storage locations. This role requires strong organizational and time-management skills to ensure timely and accurate placement of equipment to support warehouse and transportation operations. The Yard Hostler Driver must operate yard trucks and other equipment following safety guidelines, perform routine equipment inspections, and communicate effectively with dispatchers, drivers, and warehouse staff. The Yard Hostler Driver will report to the Transportation Supervisor.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
Safely maneuver trailers and containers in confined yard spaces.
Conduct pre- and post-trip inspections on yard trucks and equipment.
Coordinate with warehouse and transportation teams to optimize workflow.
Maintain accurate records of trailer movements and yard inventory.
Coordinate with dispatchers, drivers, and warehouse staff to optimize trailer placements and reduce delays in loading and unloading operations.
Assist with loading and unloading trailers when required, using forklifts or pallet jacks, following company safety guidelines.
Support warehouse operations by ensuring the timely availability of equipment and materials.
Adhere to all company policies, including safety and operational protocols, and participate in training sessions or safety meetings as required.
Perform light maintenance or cleanliness tasks, such as clearing debris or maintaining yard truck cleanliness, to keep the yard organized and operational.
Perform pallet drop-offs or deliveries to customers outside of the yard as needed.
Collect mileage and reefer hours on equipment.
Other duties as assigned by Transportation Management.
Qualifications and Requirements:
Valid CDL Class A is required.
Doubles and/or triples is a plus.
Prior Yard Hostler experience is a plus.
A clean DMV record is required and must be able to submit a current 5-year DMV Driver's Record.
As of 1/6/2023, The Department of Transportation’s Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse is now in effect, all applicants must create a profile at fmcsa.dot.gov before being hired.
Employment offer is contingent upon successfully passing a drug screen.
Must have good listening skills, verbal communication skills and follow Manager instructions.
Can read and speak the English language sufficiently as required by the FMCSA.
Must be 21 years of age or older.
Physical Requirements:
Must be able to lift/move up to 50 lbs
Ability to use lift gate, dollies/hand truck, scanners, navigation
Ability to reach, bend, stoop, squat, turn/twist body, push and/or pull, stand, kneel and walk
Work Conditions:
Ability to remain calm and courteous under pressure and communicate professionally with persons of all backgrounds.
May be exposed to various weather conditions, including rain, heat, and cold, depending on the season.
The work environment may also include noise, dust, and exhaust fumes from trucks and other machinery.
Work may be repetitious, stressful and often requires quick decision-making to handle tasks efficiently while minimizing downtime in the yard or delays in deliveries.
Hourly Range: $33.00 per hour DOE
Schedule: 4x10 Shift - Sunday to Thursday (Tuesdays off), 6:00 pm to 4:00 am*
*Work hours can vary based on operational needs, often requiring flexibility to accommodate rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays. Overtime may be required.
