Job Description - Youth Advocate

Complies with program requirements and goals to support tribal youth by guiding them through prevention programs that build skills, knowledge, and resilience against suicide, substance abuse, and victimization. The Youth Advocate fosters strong relationships with parents, teachers, law enforcement, and partner agencies to create a supportive network. Creativity and adaptability are key, especially in using Audio/Visual and online platforms to engage youth effectively. Provides and coordinates outreach and awareness, victim advocacy, and case management services to youth and their families.

Work Schedule:

Monday - Friday; 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM; 1 hour lunch break

(These hours can vary depending on activity)

Job Functions:

Include, but not limited to, the following:

  • Coordinates prevention programs and activities for Native American youth and their families.
  • Assists with supervising prevention program staff, volunteers, and interns.
  • Assists in administering grant and program funding deliverables, including the timely completion of reports and budget recommendations.
  • Must become familiar with the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), Johnson O’Malley (JOM) program, and Title VI Indian Education guidelines, as related to this position.
  • Assists in administering the Johnson O’Malley program.
  • Inputs data and maintains PITU and /or contractually required information data base systems to track client/youth information.
  • Provides outreach and awareness, victim advocacy, and case management services to victims and their families.
  • Serves as a community educator.
  • Assists with the creation and production of video newsletters including filming, processing, editing and distribution.
  • Youth Nights: Plans and carries-out activities that stimulate intellectual, social, and leadership development of Native American Youth and encourages positive youth participation.
  • Supports Youth who are involved with cultural presentations of Native Dance, Drumming, and Native American Flute.
  • Family Engagement/Community Nights: Plans and carries-out activities that involve families and community members in prevention activities and encourages positive participation.
  • Incorporates youth victim services, outreach, awareness, and education into Native Youth Program activities.
  • Provides one on one mentoring and advocacy to youth who are identified as moderate to high risk or who have been victims of a crime.
  • Works as an active member of departmental team and contributes to all areas of planning, developing and presentation of youth and family/community nights and events.
  • Attends professional training to maintain licensure (when applicable) and to stay current on child/youth development and common mental health issues for children and youth.
  • Attends staff meetings and events when assigned.
  • Requires frequent travel to fulfill job responsibilities.
  • Other duties as assigned to support the efficient operations of the FourPoints Health and the Tribe.

Necessary Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of the organization and community.
  • Ability to manage and perform with a high degree of autonomy, organization, and adaptability.
  • Must be able to demonstrate respect for and awareness of Native American customs, traditions, and socioeconomic needs.
  • Must have excellent oral and written communication skills, including public speaking with large and small groups of different managerial, socioeconomic, cultural, ethnic, and educational backgrounds.
  • Ability to recognize and honor the unique cultural practices of the local community while maintaining professional boundaries regarding personal or external tribal traditions.

General Requirements:

  • Must be insurable through the Tribe’s vehicle insurance required.
  • Must pass a criminal and fingerprint background check according to P.L. 101-630 standards required.
  • Must pass a pre-employment alcohol/drug screening required.
  • Must be willing to travel and work into the evenings and weekends as required.

Education & Experience:

  • High School diploma, equivalent GED or higher required.
  • Preferred experience working within diverse populations required.
  • Obtain training on audio/visual productions and processing programs within three (3) months of hire date required.

License & Certification:

  • Must possess, maintain, and provide proof of a valid Driver’s License required.
  • Must obtain, maintain, and provide proof of a valid First Aid and CPR Certification (Red Cross or American Heath Association) within three (3) months of hire date required.
