Job Description - Youth Development Professional

Department: Operations   

Reports to: Unit Director  

Exempt Status: Non-Exempt  

Position Type & Pay Rate: Part-Time (22.5hrs) / $24.00- $26.00

Key Responsibilities & Essential Functions:  

  • Supervision & Engagement: Lead activities that promote social, emotional, and physical growth for 20 youth members. 
  • Mentorship: Provide guidance and encouragement to help youth achieve their goals. 
  • Classroom & Program Management: Create a safe, inclusive, and structured learning environment. 
  • Collaboration: Work with staff, parents, and community partners to support youth development. 

Classroom Management and Teaching  

  • Establish classroom rules, manage activities, and ensure supervision of children’s basic needs, meals, and breaks. 
  • Adapt teaching methods to align with children’s interests and learning styles. 
  • Track children’s progress and communicate effectively with parents and teachers. 
  • Maintain a clean, organized classroom environment. 

Relationships  

  • Mentoring: Serve as a positive role model and mentor to young participants, fostering their self-esteem and personal development  
  • Maintaining a Positive Environment: Cultivate a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere where every child feels valued and respected  
  • Team Collaboration: Collaborate with colleagues to ensure program goals are met and share best practices  

Requirements

Qualifications & Experience:  

  • Experience in educational or recreational settings (e.g., after-school programs, sports, theater, or special education) preferred. 
  • Knowledge of childhood development principles, classroom management, and ability to inspire youth in a positive learning environment. 
  • Certification in First Aid preferred, or willingness to obtain; Department of Justice and FBI background check clearance required. 
  • Effective communication skills and ability to build rapport with children and families, promoting inclusivity and understanding diverse backgrounds. 
  • 18 years of age, negative TB screen required, NCLB certification (or 48 transferable units), and multilingual skills (e.g., Spanish, Vietnamese) a plus.

  • Genuine belief in the mission of BGCSV and a commitment to serving youth and the community.

  • Safety and Security: Observes safety procedures, takes appropriate action when needed, and reports unsafe conditions. 
  • Emotional Intelligence: Maintains control under pressure, approaches others tactfully, and demonstrates respect and consideration for all individuals. 

Work Environment & Physical Demands:  

  • Frequently required to stand, walk, climb, bend, stoop, kneel, or crawl; use hand and finger dexterity. 
  • Continually required to talk or hear; occasional exposure to outside weather conditions. 
  • Rarely works in high places (e.g., playground equipment); occasional exposure to bloodborne and airborne pathogens. 
  • Work environment typically has moderate to loud noise levels. 
  • Occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds; use walkie-talkie radios for communication.
