Job Description - Animal technician - research lab

The Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine seeks an Animal Technician to join the Duck Research Lab in Eastport, NY . The Animal Technician is primarily responsible for the care of ducks at the Duck Research Laboratory and also engagement with the efficient production of duck biologics in accordance with good manufacturing practices outlined by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). With a keen attention to detail, this individual supports the services provided by the Duck Research Lab by collaboratively working to meet regulatory standards and client needs.

The job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Responsible for animal husbandry for ducks within the lab, including daily care for animals (ducks) and assisting with maintaining animal facilities: perform daily cleaning; clean and disinfect following studies

  • Maintain extensive and meticulous records to adhere to USDA requirements

  • Maintain laboratory, production, and product storage facilities; clean and disinfect work areas, sterilize, and dispose of regulated medical waste generated from production or quality control activities

  • Inventory equipment and chemicals on a regular basis

  • Perform quality control testing, including but not limited to handling of ducklings, inoculation and drawing of blood samples from ducklings and sanitation of animal facilities

  • Assist with vaccine production, including preparing sterile equipment, media, and diluents

  • Perform microbiology techniques on vaccine, bacterin master and production seed lines

  • Assist with maintaining positive control cultures

  • Assist with perform chicken embryo inoculation (under direct supervision)

  • Frequently use equipment including autoclaves, pH meters, spectrophotometer, and peristaltic pumps

  • Other duties as assigned

Employees working in the laboratory must receive the pre-exposure rabies prophylaxis vaccination series prior to or immediately after hire, which will be paid for by the department.

Employees of the Animal Health Diagnostic Center must adhere to the AHDC Quality Assurance system, confidentiality statement, standard operating procedures, and organizational policies.

Required Qualifications

  • High school Diploma and up to 1 year relevant experience or equivalent combination

  • Strong attention to accuracy and detailed record keeping, with proven ability to follow established procedures

  • Excellent self-management practices and a high level of initiative to successfully organize competing priorities to meet deadlines

  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills

  • Proficient with basic software applications (Microsoft Office), with the ability to learn new software quickly

  • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time at benches, computers, or while using laboratory equipment

  • Ability to handle sensitive, confidential information with tact and discretion

  • Ability to work with formalin

  • Must possess and maintain a valid New York State driver's license

  • Ability to push, pull, lift, or carry up to 50 pounds

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate degree in biology or microbiology

  • Pharmaceutical production experience; adherence to regulatory requirements

  • Previous media prep experience

  • Experience working within an organization with an established quality assurance program

  • Experience caring for laboratory animals

  • Familiar with common diseases impacting avian health

  • Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing

  • Passionate about working in an organization that values and promotes diversity, equity, inclusion, anti-racism, and wellbeing

  • Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members

Important Details about the Position

  • This is an onsite position located in Eastport, NY on Long Island

  • This is a part time three-year term position with potential for extension contingent upon funding and performance

  • We are unable to provide Visa sponsorship, now or in the future, for this position.

  • Relocation assistance will not be provided for this position

This is a part time position, up to 29 hours per week. While normal business hours are 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, specific schedules may change to meet the needs of the business, requiring employees to work early mornings, evenings, weekends, University holidays and scheduled breaks.

The Cornell University Duck Research Laboratory (DRL) is a research, service and biologics production laboratory located on Long Island at Eastport, New York. It is a national and international resource for information on duck disease control, good husbandry practices, proper nutrition, and various other aspects of duck production. The lab provides comprehensive diagnostic necropsy and testing services to identify illness and produces vaccines to assist in the prevention of common diseases affecting duck health.
