Working under the immediate supervision of a pharmacist, the Pharmacy Technician I role interacts with patients and health care providers to perform a variety of technical pharmaceutical tasks including triaging medication-related communications and maintaining the electronic medical record.

The Retail Pharmacy Technician I will assist the Pharmacist in professional activities and perform assigned tasks in the outpatient pharmacy. All activities of Pharmacy Technicians are performed under the direct supervision of a registered Pharmacist. The Pharmacy Technician I role interacts with patients and healthcare providers to perform a variety of technical pharmaceutical tasks including filling of new prescriptions and refills, performing pharmaceutical calculations, preparing, medications and performing point of sale activities.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares, packages and labels medication in an accurate and efficient manner.
  • Online processing of prescription orders including billing appropriately and accurately
  • Triage incoming phone calls and electronic messages relating to medications.
  • Interact with professional and technical staff in a courteous manner.
  • Cleaning and restocking pharmacy areas.
  • Follows inventory control processes performing cycle counts and checking outdates.
  • Accurately operates CII safe and follows all controlled substance procedures.
  • Direct clinical inquiries requiring a pharmacist's professional judgment to a pharmacist.
  • Answer inquiries not requiring a pharmacist's professional judgment.
  • Assist in the training of pharmacy technicians, apprentices, and interns.
  • Other pharmacy related duties in accordance with regulations under Washington State Pharmacy Quality Assurance Commission
  • Know and follow all Pharmacy Department and Fred Hutch policies and procedures, as well as all applicable state and federal laws.
  • Provides good customer service to patients by being attentive and quick to respond at pharmacy window and follows through on problems.
  • Assist patient with intake of new and refill prescriptions.
  • Order entry of medication orders, which would include controlled substances, into the ambulatory pharmacy computer system, for pharmacist verification.
  • Update allergies and medical conditions in the electronic patient medical record.
  • Fill patient prescriptions:
    • Utilize EPIC Willow Ambulatory for filling, labeling and batching.
    • Online adjudication to patients' insurance or other third party payor.
  • Perform financial functions supporting the prescription filling process:
    • Review patient financial information using online resources.
    • Third party billing
    • Collection of payments and co-payments.
    • Assist patient with alternate sources of payment (i.e. referral to Patient Financial Counselor if appropriate)
  • Dispense prescriptions via point of sale to patients, appropriately referring those that require counseling to a pharmacist for dispensing.
  • Manage inventory of pharmaceuticals and supplies:
    • Utilization of C2 Safe for narcotic inventory.
    • Restock vials and supplies.
    • Complete monthly outdate checking.
    • Return to Stock (RTS) following correct process.
  • Prepare and file prescription records, including archival as required.

Qualifications

Required:

  • High school graduate or equivalent
  • Certified as a Washington State Pharmacy Technician
  • Ability to perform pharmaceutical calculations
  • Ability to communicate verbally in person, on the phone, and in writing in a clear, concise and professional manner
  • Familiar with the generic names of drugs along with their basic indication
  • Ability to use pharmacy computer systems and order entry in an accurate and efficient manner
  • Accurate prescription processing.

Preferred:

  • Certified as a Washington State Pharmacy Technician from an accredited technical institute
  • Experience in a retail pharmacy
  • Oncology knowledge
  • Experience with electronic medical records
  • Excellent analytical skills.
  • Experience in non-sterile compounding.
  • Knowledgeable in third party insurance billing.
  • Ability to operate a Point of Sale
  • Experience with Electronic Medical Records.

The hourly pay range for this position is from $29.76 to $42.37 and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications.

This position may be eligible for a sign-on bonus.
