Department Summary:

UNT Physics offers BS/BA, MS, and Ph.D. degrees. It also offers a BS/MS accelerated program for students to obtain both BS and MS degrees in 5 years. In addition to general physics, its undergraduate program offers Engineering Physics, Computational Physics, and Astronomy concentration

Position Overview:

Responsible for the daily operations of the UNT’s Rafes Urban Astronomy Center and Monroe Robotic Observatories, including maintenance and upgrades.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree in related field and three years of related experience or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Strong presentation and public speaking skills.Strong problem-solving skills.Ability to use a variety of complex computer applications.Ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations verbally and in writing.
Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships.Ability to work independently and lead project teams effectively. Considerable knowledge of University policies and procedures related to functional area (or ability to rapidly assimilate).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Background in astronomy education
  • Experience in observatory and facility maintenance
  • Knowledge of telescope and robotic mount operation, calibration, and maintenance
  • Experience coordinating observational events and sales reporting.
  • Experience with astrophotography, using CCD, CMOS, and/or DLSR cameras.
Work Schedule:

Regular 8-5, but the work schedule will include evenings and weekends due to the nature of the job duty.

Coordinates and manages day-to-day observatory operations for Rafes Urban Astronomy Center and Monroe Robotic Observatory: Coordinates and assists observatory lab and outreach; hires, manages, and trains student employees; presents observatory events as needed, answers observatory related inquires/requests; completes outreach revenue deposits, maintains outreach sales records, and submits monthly revenue and attendance reports. Submits quarterly progress reports. o:

Observatory Maintenance and update: Maintains all Observatory equipment and any relevant maintenance or insurance contracts. Plans, organizes, and executes replacement of equipment and as it depreciates. Maintains facilities inventory, organization, and cleanliness. Coordinates with facilities for repairs or lawn service. Establishes, coordinates, and maintains regular maintenance schedules for observatories and their equipment. Upgrade observatory. o:

Assists Director and Faculty as needed: Planetarium operations for both labs and outreach. Fills in covering shows if needed. Assists with program development for observatory outreach and labs. Supervisor of the program on evenings, weekends, and when Director is out.

o:

Program Computer Maintenance: Ensures lab computers stay updated and coordinates service for them with IT and manages computer updates. Ensures all computers stay in compliance with UNT policy. o:

Supervises all astronomy van operations, employee training, and scheduled maintenance.
