Job Title: Accounting Manager (Non-Profit Organization)

Location: Detroit, MI

Job Type: Full-time

Job Summary: We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Accounting Manager to join our non-profit organization. The Accounting Manager will be responsible for overseeing the financial operations, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, managing grants, and providing financial analysis to support organizational decision-making. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in accounting principles, excellent leadership skills, and a passion for our organization's mission.

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the accounting department, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and general ledger activities.
  • Develop and implement financial policies and procedures to ensure accuracy and transparency in financial reporting.
  • Prepare and analyze financial statements, such as income statements, balance sheets, and cash flow statements, in accordance with GAAP or other relevant standards for non-profits.
  • Manage grant-related financial activities, including budgeting for grant proposals, tracking grant expenditures, and ensuring compliance with grant requirements and reporting.
  • Coordinate with auditors for annual audits and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, including IRS filings for tax-exempt status (Form 990 in the U.S.).
  • Supervise and mentor accounting staff, providing guidance on accounting principles, systems, and procedures.
  • Collaborate with other departments such as fundraising, program management, and administration to support overall organizational goals and initiatives.
  • Evaluate and recommend improvements or upgrades to accounting systems and technology to enhance efficiency and data integrity.
  • Interpret financial data and trends to provide insights to senior management and the board of directors for informed decision-making.
  • Communicate financial information clearly and effectively to stakeholders with varying levels of financial expertise, including board members, donors, and external auditors.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA certification preferred).
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in accounting or finance, with at least 1 years in a supervisory or managerial role.
  • Strong knowledge of accounting principles, financial reporting, and compliance requirements for non-profit organizations.
  • Experience with grant management and reporting is highly desirable.
  • Proficiency in accounting software and financial management systems (e.g., QuickBooks, NetSuite, or similar platforms).
  • Excellent analytical skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
