Job Description - Environmental Specialist

Who You Are You are an Environmental Specialist with proven experience in environmental compliance and have demonstrated working knowledge of environmental regulations and engineering experience preferably in refinery/terminal/process plant areas that you can contribute to the following areas: designing, developing, testing and implementing technical solutions which would help companies to make the right operational decisions to actively reduce their negative impact on the environment and humans. What You’ll Be Doing As the Environmental Specialist , you will be reporting to the Technical Manager and will support compliance in air, water, waste, and remediation disciplines for the EPA-authorized State of Hawaii regulatory programs. You will inter-island travel if necessary to support neighbor island operations. You will provide environmental support (both in office and field) as necessary to terminals and retail stations including but not limited to conducting inspections and audits as directed. Practically Speaking You Will
  • Establish priorities under tight deadlines and have a proven track record as a motivated, self-starter who can work on multiple projects and priorities within a fast-paced environment.
  • Provide onsite representation during regulatory inspections.
  • Support field leadership in investigating HES&S incidents and assist in coordinating the required documentation.
  • Collect soil samples for spill clean-up activities.
  • Assist operations with job pre-planning for waste minimization and management.
  • Coordinate with contractors to address any issues that arise.
  • Evaluate and plan waste reclamation and recycling opportunities.
  • Research, support and assist with regulatory compliance reports in all disciplines as directed by the Technical Manager.
  • Interface with other teams to review project scope of work to determine potential environmental impacts and mitigation measures.
  • Participate on oil spill response team and other emergency response teams as required.

  • Maintain commitment to a high standard of safety, complies with all safety laws and safety policies ules and reports actual and potential safety violations to appropriate supervisory or management personnel to further core value of safety.
  • Proactively update and maintain operating standards, emergency procedures and any other documents as needed.
  • Perform a variety of special assignments as directed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • This full-time permanent position is based in Kapolei, Hawaii, USA.   • Employment is contingent upon successfully passing a reference check, drug test, criminal background check, functional capacity examination, and a driver history review.
  • The role has specific physical requirements necessary to perform the essential functions of the job, which are available upon request.
  • The candidate must be able to obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC) within sixty days of hire.
  • Inter-island travel will be required.
What You Will Bring
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemical Engineering, Civil/Environmental Engineering, Geology, or related field.
  • Requires a minimum of three years’ experience or an equivalent combination of education/experience in environmental compliance preferably in a petroleum refinery/terminal/process plant.
  • Proficient Microsoft Office Suite skills, including editing and proofreading.
  • Proficient in using technology to aide work efficiency and processes (software, mobile devices, email, cloud services, and IoT (Internet of Things) integrations.
  • Valid driver’s license with clean abstract as required.
Nice To Haves
  • Competencies include accuracy, attention to detail, proven record of risk management and in-depth knowledge of mechanical integrity, rotating equipment reliability, engineering standards, equipment reliability.
  • Preferred prior assignment in a similar and/or related environmental program setting (specifically oil or chemical manufacturing, or similar regulatory compliance program).
  • Knowledge and understanding of Meridium/Maximo/SAP database.
