Job Description - Fellowship - Bariatric

 

 

The Legacy Bariatric Surgery Fellowship is a twelve-month program focusing on the field of Bariatric Surgery. This is primarily a clinical laparoscopic bariatric surgery fellowship. The bariatric surgeons are experienced in laparoscopic bariatric surgery and perform a large volume of a variety of procedures, including gastric bypass, lap-band revisions, sleeve gastrectomy, interventional endoscopy and other revisional procedures. The program performs some robotic assisted surgery. The program is involved in evaluating novel endoscopic devices. The program focuses on acquisition of advanced laparoscopic and robotic surgical skills and clinical research. Fellows will participate in ongoing research projects, and initiate their own projects. Legacy has institutional support for clinical research with existing research coordinators and other infrastructure. Legacy Good Samaritan Hospital is a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence. There are opportunities for presentation at scientific meetings and publication. Fellows rotate with other advanced laparoscopic surgeons at Providence Portland Hospital (Kevin Reavis, Daniel Davila-Bradley, Missy DeSouza) whose practices focus on laparoscopic foregut and bariatric surgery. Fellows are given the option of attending several courses for laparoscopic fellows, and travel funding for presentations at meetings is provided.

  1. Fulfills satisfactorily, and to the best of his/her ability, the academic requirements of the training program in which Clinical Fellow is enrolled. The appropriate accreditation or certification authority for the fellowship, if applicable, and the Program Director define program requirements.
  2. Incorporates information provided through the fellowship program's performance evaluation process to expand his/her knowledge base and develop the skills, values and attitudes applicable to his/her level of training.
  3. Demonstrates knowledge of clinical medicine and applies this knowledge in the provision of inpatient and outpatient care, as appropriate for Fellow’s level of training.
  4. In consideration of the patient’s needs and age, demonstrates skill in patient admission, assessment, treatment planning, monitoring and discharge planning.
  5. Demonstrates competency in medical records documentation.
  6. Demonstrates good judgment in prioritizing and organizing workload to ensure timeliness of patient care.
  7. Fulfills any duty hours that are scheduled by Hospital and to which Clinical Fellow is assigned.
  8. Maintains and increases medical knowledge through self-directed learning, attendance at educational conferences and meetings, and participation in professional organizations.
  9. Participates in committees and work groups, as assigned, and actively contributes to group problem solving.
  10. Provides appropriate education to patients related to medical condition, self-care needs, health care habits, mobility, etc.
  11. Incorporates age-specific learning principles into patient education strategies.
  12. Familiarizes himself/herself with and abides by the policies, rules, procedures, and regulations which govern the work and conduct of fellows and have been established by the fellowship program, the Hospital and its Medical Staff.

Education:

Must be a graduate of a medical school accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education, the American Association of Colleges of Podiatric Medicine or the American Osteopathic Association, or a graduate of a medical school recognized by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates.

 

Must have completed an accredited residency-training program in a specialty directly related to the fellowship-training program.

 

Licensure:

Must hold a regular State Medical License or Dental License for the applicable state, or a temporary certification or registration, to practice medicine or dentistry in the applicable state in accordance with applicable statutes and regulations.

 

Additional Criteria:

Must meet the selection criteria for his/her fellowship program as defined by the accreditation or certification authority for that fellowship program, if applicable, and/or as defined by the Fellowship Director for that fellowship.
