Job Description - Heritage Zoologist

Organization
The Oklahoma Natural Heritage Inventory (ONHI) at the Oklahoma Biological Survey (OBS) is seeking a Heritage Zoologist. OBS is a state agency and research department at the University of Oklahoma. ONHI is a program within OBS and is responsible for maintaining an inventory of the state’s habitats and species. The ONHI focus is rare and endangered species, species of special concern, and significant ecological communities. Heritage Biologists conduct field inventories of rare species and communities to gather current information about the state’s biodiversity. Preference will be given to candidates with expertise in aquatic habitats, invertebrates, and/or experience working in Oklahoma or the southern plains. The Heritage Zoologist is a research staff position supervised by the ONHI Coordinator. This position is a two-year position with the possibility of renewal at the end of the term. The position includes a competitive salary, benefits, and paid time off. Job Duties Developing and executing research and field projects relating to taxa or system of expertise in Oklahoma. Including:  Identification and curation of specimens Data collection, curation, and submission to relevant data repositories Disseminating results and analyses to cooperating agencies, peer experts, and the public Seek external or internal funding to support projects Reviewing Oklahoma organisms for conservation priorities. Including:  Developing state conservation rankings for NatureServe on taxa of expertise Compiling data from databases, literature, and other sources Update internal databases with relevant information Collaborating with and providing data and analyses to cooperating agencies Represent the Oklahoma Biological Survey and Oklahoma Natural Heritage Inventory in the broader biological and conservation community and to the public. Possible activities include, but are not limited to: Active member of organizations, boards, and committees Editor for, reviewer for, or contributor to journal or newsletter Developing and giving presentations, workshops, field days, tours, or webinars Developing and writing outreach or educational materials  Job Location
Required Education: Bachelors in Biological Sciences and 24 months experience OR Masters Degree. Skills: Proficient in Microsoft OfficeHighly organized and able to handle multiple projects and deadlinesAbility to communicate well and to handle multiple projects and deadlinesTechnical writing skillsKnowledge of research methodologies and techniquesProject management experienceKnowledge of specialized terminology (e.g., scientific or technical) Certifications :
  •  Driver's license required
Advertised Physical Requirements:
  • Able to carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Bend, sit, reach, and stand for long period of time; walk for long distances and walk on rough terrain
  • Able to work outdoors in all weather conditions
