Overview:

The Department of Technology, Design, and Technical Education (TDTE) at Utah State University (USU) seeks candidates for a full-time, academic-year (9-month), non-tenure track term lecturer position that offers benefits. This position is for the medical assistant program at the USU Blanding Utah campus. The appointment is 95% teaching and 5% service. The lecturer in the Medical Assistant program is responsible for coordination of the Medical Assistant program on the Blanding campus, ensuring compliance with programmatic accreditation and/or licensure, internal consistency, and graduate outcomes meeting the institution’s expectation. The lecturer will instruct the standardized curriculum, review lesson plans, and prepare for class instruction, grade and electronically record assignments, actively promote student retention, support externship activities as applicable, assist in accreditation requirements, and perform related work as required.


The lecturer in the Medical Assistant program on the Blanding campus will also act as program director and is directly responsible and accountable for ensuring the fulfillment of educational goals and objectives, and ensuring program compliance with Department of Education standards as well as maintaining full accreditation. These responsibilities require leadership in both academic and workforce areas and include meeting student retention goals; participating in educational planning; program organization; training and overseeing part-time faculty involved in the medical assistant program; evaluating student performance; motivating and advising students; acting as liaison between students and clinical site directors in placement and evaluation of students during their clinical rotations and generating program reports as needed.


It is anticipated that the individual selected for this faculty position will start in August of 2024. This position will be supervised by the associate department head who directs the health professions programs in the Department of Technology, Design and Technical Education.


Review of applications will begin on April 22, 2024, and application reviews and interviews will continue until the position is filled.

Responsibilities:
  • Participate in curriculum development and instructional advancement in the field of Medical Assisting.
  • Assess the instructional needs of students in the program and coordinate the development of a plan to address these needs.
  • Maintain the primary responsibility for scheduling classes within the program.
  • Participate in the development of the Blanding campus program budget.
  • Assist and encourage full-time and part-time faculty with their professional development.
  • Participate in review of the University catalog on an annual basis with regard to program curricula and make appropriate recommendations for changes.
  • Participate on hiring committees when recruiting of new faculty for the Medical Assistant Program is required.
  • Complete peer evaluation of both full-time and part-time faculty in the program.
  • Coordinate textbook orders for the Blanding program.
  • Maintain communication and work cooperatively with clinical instructors of off-campus instructional sites.
  • Assist with the coordination of Distance Education classes.
  • Serve on institutional committees, screening committees for faculty positions as assigned.
Qualifications:

Minimum Requirements:

  • An associate degree in a related discipline from an accredited college or university.
  • A minimum of 3 years in a healthcare facility with a minimum of one year of direct patient care.
  • A current industry registration or certification in medical assisting through a nationally recognized and accredited certifying agency.
  • Job offer is contingent upon the successful completion of a background check.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Preferred requirements:

  • Prior teaching experience
  • A seasoned background in medical assisting, nursing, or closely related fields.
  • Formal teaching experience teaching at an accredited post-secondary institution
  • Desire to succeed and a willingness to work to become a better instructor.
  • Cultural sensitivity and an ability to build rapport with a culturally diverse workforce in a multicultural setting.
  • Dynamic interpersonal skills and a commitment as a team member; ability to foster consensus and collaboration.
  • An ability to set specific program goals and develop related curriculum.
  • An ability to accommodate varying student learning needs through field exercises, labs, hands-on, lecture, self-directed learning, and clinical experience.
  • Strong desire to help students succeed.
