Job Description - Outreach Coordinator

Essential Job Functions

The Outreach Coordinator meets the community where they are by attending events and interacting directly with the public. They bring the Library out into the community! Under the direct supervision of the Community Engagement Assistant Manager, and with an unwavering commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, the Outreach Coordinator will:

  1. Identify and schedule opportunities for library outreach at community-wide festivals and outreach events. Attend community outreach events and meetings to promote the Library. Create a fun and engaging environment and convey the Library’s mission and purpose. Plan and prepare interactive activities for outreach events.

  2. Foster positive relationships in the community by collaborating with local organizations and maintaining connections with partners.

  3. Transport, set up and tear down displays and other outreach equipment. Order promotional giveaways. Maintain an inventory of display equipment and materials. Field and fulfill requests for outreach materials.

  4. Maintain an outreach schedule with details about location and staffing. Schedule in internal scheduling software. Coordinate alternative staffing for outreach events. Evaluate outreach success. Track metrics for outreach event attendance.

  5. Identify key audiences, partners, and neighborhoods for outreach with special emphasis on diversity and inclusion. Assist with developing systemwide outreach strategies.

  6. Assist with system wide training to staff on successful outreach measures.

  7. Stay informed about events and outreach opportunities in the community. Support special projects with established community partners.

  8. Lead and/or participate in staff committees. Collaborate with public service staff to plan and develop outreach efforts.

  9. Perform other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited four year college or university.

  • At least 1 year experience working with the public and/or experience in public libraries.

Hours

  • Normal workweek is 40 hours.
  • Frequent evenings and weekends for community event involvement.

Wages

  • Starting/Hiring Range: $17.99 - $21.59, Hourly
  • Total Salary Range: $17.99 - $25.19, Hourly

Requirements

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as strong organizational skills.

  • Public service orientation and commitment to excellent and genuine customer service.

  • Demonstration of character and integrity in all situations while upholding SJCPL’s ethical standards.

  • Experience working with and proficiency with computers, including Internet, Microsoft Office, Google Suite, and Windows and Mac OS and communication technologies.

  • Knowledge of library materials and services appropriate for a variety of patrons in relevant age group.

  • Physical ability and strength to bend, reach, lift, and move up to 50lbs. and to stand for long periods of time.

  • Reliable transportation.

  • Friendly, outgoing, and comfortable with public speaking.

  • Spanish language skills preferred.

  • Form and maintain excellent working relationships with library staff at all levels, patrons and community organizations. Network and partner with appropriate community organizations.

  • Manage confidential information appropriately.

  • Work patiently and creatively with all patrons.

  • Model excellent customer service.

  • Teach and instruct others on a variety of topics.

  • Become proficient with current library technology.

  • Tolerate event hours in variable weather conditions such as rain, wind, heat, and cold.
