The Rehabilitation Center for the Blind is a state-of-the-art training facility located in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The assistive technology teacher is part of a team of professionals with expertise in teaching skills to students who have low vision or are blind. Referrals come from Service to the Blind and Visually Impaired rehabilitation counselors and rehabilitation teachers statewide. The incumbent will assess individual needs for assistive technology along with providing installation and training on all types of assistive technology with a focus on computers with specialized hardware and software including MAC devices and Chromebook and other types of low vision and blindness equipment including but not limited to: screen reading, magnification, OCR, speech output, low vision, Braille output, or a combination of techniques. The incumbent will provide training to individuals who are blind or visually impaired to efficiently operate a computer and/or other assistive technology devices to remain independent and/or obtain employment. This position will work very closely with other teachers within the skills of blindness classes to help individuals to reach their goals. Licenses and Certifications: To be eligible for classification as a Senior Rehabilitation Teacher level (GI), the applicant must have national rehabilitation teacher's certification by the Academy for Certification of Vision Rehabilitation and Education Professionals (ACVREP). Applicants without this certification will be classified as a Rehabilitation Teacher (GH). Possession of a Certified Assistive Technology Instructional Specialist for Individuals with Visual Impairments certificate is preferred. Will consider candidates willing to participate in additional education in assistive technology training upon hire. The Ideal Candidate Will Have: An interest in working with people with vision loss to teach assistive technology and computer skills leading to employment and/or independence. Proficient and experience in industry standard Access Technology including but not limited to: screen reading, magnification, OCR, etc. Also, ensuring information on websites and documents within the Agency are accessible and providing technical support to individuals with questions about a variety of devices. Suggested degrees and courses of study could include rehabilitation counseling, special education, human development and family studies, computer science or similar degrees. Need to have the ability to work with a minimal amount of supervision and use judgment to assess each individuals' skill levels and needs adequately. Applicants with a bachelor's degree who are willing to pursue additional education in assistive technology training will be considered. Knowledge of: Teaching, instructional, and counseling techniques; the principles and methods of vocational instruction; community-based resources; the limitations of people with physical, mental, or emotional disabilities; medical, psychiatric, and psychological terminology; the adaptive skills necessary to compensate for the loss of physical, mental, or sensory functioning. Alternative skills to accommodate the challenges of individuals who are blind or visually impaired. Develop and ensure ongoing structure and competencies for the Access Technology component of rehabilitation. Skill to:
Work effectively with individuals one-on-one or in small groups to teach how to utilize assistive technology to reduce barriers to employment and/or independence. Ability to:
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with clients; understand, interpret, and follow instructions, policies, and regulations; teach in a classroom or home situation; evaluate clients' progress; communicate effectively and demonstrate specific vocational skills and techniques; determine appropriate training techniques for each individual; teach assistive technology devices to clients and others involved in the field of blind rehabilitation; communicate information clearly and concisely; and develop reasonable alternate plans for accomplishing job tasks as needed.
