Job Description - Technical Writer, Pediatrics

Department PED-NEONATAL MEDICINE (IN-PNEO-IUINA) Department Information The Department of Pediatrics employs nearly 1,000 faculty and staff who work alongside employees of Riley Hospital for Children and students of IU School of Medicine to make Riley Children's Health Indiana's largest and most skilled pediatric system. The Perinatal Genomics Program is embedded in the Neonatology Division of Indiana University School of Medicine. The program was founded in 2021 to study the impact of genetic disease on critically ill newborns that require care in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). The mission of the program is to improve the detection of genetic disease in the NICU and outcomes for patients and families impacted by genetic disease. Job Summary Department-Specific Responsibilities
  • Manages the National Institute of Health (NIH) and related proposal and renewal submissions and co-leads grant writing efforts under the direction and supervision of Dr. Kristen Suhrie; grant proposals are expected to involve collaborations within other divisions of IU as well as with collaborators at outside institutions.
  • Works with Dr. Suhrie to prepare and submit peer reviewed manuscripts for publication, tracks progress on these efforts, and edits manuscripts based on reviewer comments as to allow for resubmission when appropriate.
  • Oversees and edits the work of grant proposals and manuscripts.
  • Collaborates with teams and Principal Investigators on creating and writing narratives, completing forms, and coordinating application components.
  • Serves as a liaison between external funding agencies, corporate entities, non-profit sector, and other universities to lead proposal teams.
  • Coordinates information flow, organizing and integrating proposal components, reviewing proposals for consistency with agency guidelines, and assuring timely submission of multiple proposals at the same time.
  • Coordinates data flow from current studies to incorporate into grant proposals and manuscripts.
General Responsibilities
  • Works with key stakeholders to determine needs, reviews proposal requirements, organizes and creates assignments, and ensures adherence to deadlines; writes and prepares various technical documents such as research/grant proposals and applications for submission to funding and regulatory agencies including writing and/or editing ideas, abstracts, protocols and consents, study reports and appendices, or other regulatory documents; contributes to overall project management and cross-functional working groups to facilitate development and finalization of assigned documents; ensures quality and consistency among formatting and style; collects information on reported problems regarding consistency and/or clarity in proposals and manuscripts; amends proposals as needed/required; maintains version control for all documents.
  • Contributes to and participates in meetings with the various research groups within the department; communicates with writing project stakeholders; ensures coordination of communication between stakeholders and supports overall collaboration among stakeholders.
  • Prioritizes writing projects and provides a tracking mechanism on requests and includes estimated timelines, projects in progress, estimated completion dates, and duration of projects; follows standard procedures and processes for the optimal workflow of requests. and projects.
  • Develops print and/or online publications or public presentations of results from research by applying critical thinking to acquired scientific and medical knowledge.
  • Provides expertise on regulatory requirements and ensures assigned documents are produced in accordance with such guidance and relevant internal metrics; provides suggestions for process improvements and may provide guidance/oversight to hourly employees.

  • Bachelor's degree preferably in English or related field.
Preferred
  • Master's degree or PhD in a scientific or health related field.
WORK EXPERIENCE Required
  • 2 years of experience preferably in English or related field.
Preferred
  • 2 years of experience in scientific writing and/or grant writing

Working Conditions / Demands This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. Work Location Indianapolis, Indiana This position is eligible to work a hybrid schedule (mix between remote and in-person work), subject to change in the future based on university policy and business needs. Advertised Salary $60,000 - $70,000 per year based on experience, skill level, education, and training.
