Job Description - The Lab at MassDOT Innovation Internship Summer 2024 (23000BMI) Job Description The Lab at MassDOT Innovation Internship Summer 2024 - ( 23000BMI ) Description Position Summary: The Lab at MassDOT is seeking two (2) Summer Interns who will join our trimtab team of mobility - curious people. We are excited to welcome Interns who will be integral to our team’s ability to implement prototypes that connect dots, spark creativity, and, most importantly, serve our communities across the state . You’ll have the opportunity to work closely with MassDOT leadership, run experiments in a deeply collaborative environment, and address the needs of residents across the Commonwealth. The intent of our Summer Internship is to bring new voices and fresh perspectives into state government and explore the intersection of design (in the broad sense of the word) and transportation. The Summer Internship presents an opportunity to run a slice of a prototype — or the whole thing, depending on the scale — while also contributing to projects from the rest of the team and with MassDOT Divisions. The ideal candidate for this role will be comfortable leading c onversations , asking questions, bringing a “yes, and” spirit to meetings and some experience managing projects . Strong candidates will be able to demonstrate their ability to navigate complexity and ambiguity, while not getting overwhelmed. Responsibilities Duties and Responsibilities : You will be expected to:

  • Learn Quickly – Your eight weeks will fly by, and while we don’t need you to become an expert in that amount of time, we do need you to hit the ground running with a beginner’s mindset, asking questions, and integrating new knowledge into usable insights.
  • Implement Boldly – We learn through doing, and on this team, that means getting out into the field and actually kicking the tires on something. We need you to feel like “the owner” of your project, the one who will make it happen. Successful fellows won’t let fear get in the way of asking for help and then getting the thing done.
  • Tell the S tory – Synthesize information and communicate it back in clear, digestible ways for the public, decision-makers, and colleagues u sing a range of different communication methods. Your fellowship will culminate in a “lightning talk” to MassDOT staff and potentially external stakeholders at various levels of influence.
Your daily and weekly tasks throughout the internship will include:
  • Project manage a signature prototype, or a significant strand of an existing team prototype
  • Facilitate and coordinate project meetings utilizing a set of digital tools
  • Host and participate in weekly office hours with interested parties
  • Attend Professional Development sessions as organized by the Chief + Deputy Chief
  • Be excited to learn! As an intern, you’re expected to absorb the surroundings, ask questions, and learn throughout the experience
  • Represent the Office at public events and gain experience with public speaking through opportunities to share the work
  • Other duties as determined or specifically requested by the team’s leadership . Some nights or weekend events may be required as determined by the specifics of your signature prototype.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Candidates should be strong relationship builders, comfortable with risk, creativ e, and willing to ask questions.
  • We look for people with experience in multi-stakeholder projects. We want team members who are comfortable both working alone and in a highly collaborative office.
  • We seek individuals with subject matter expertise in the ir discipline or topic area, who are able to make connections between that passion and other topics (such as transportation) , as well a s have a broad curiosity about transportation in Massachusetts communities .
  • Ideal candidates should be “self-starters” and comfortable with charting their own course in complex and hierarchical organizations. No experience with Government is required (you’re here to learn).
  • Knowledge or willingness to learn quickly – Microsoft Office, Airtable , Asana, and Slack
  • Experience with design ( Adobe Creative Suite ) or video software packages ( Premiere , Final Cut, After Effects, Motion, etc. ) is preferred but not required.
  • L anguage proficiency other than English is appreciated but not required
Work Environment Our team operates out of 10 Park Plaza in downtown Boston . You’ll be in a shared office space with the full team which is collaborative, at times a little noisy, and fun. Interns will be in-person for the majority of their 8-week fellowship to maximize exposure to MassDOT staff , with likely one remote day each week.
