Job Description



The Summer 2024 Internship Program is an initiative through the Office of the City Administrator, whose 25+ divisions and departments operate core internal and public-facing services in San Francisco. The internship program is open to current college juniors, seniors, graduate students, recent grads and other applicants who have an interest in working for local government. This internship program is a great opportunity to work alongside and shadow professionals in desired fields of interest and truly see the impact being made in public sector divisions through a hands-on learning experience!

The duration of this internship is 12 weeks, with an opportunity to extend based on departmental need. 

Individuals hired will be appointed to a class 9922 Public Service Aide to Professional positions and compensated $27.46 per hour.

About the Budget & Planning  Team

The Budget & Planning team performs complex analysis for budget administration, policy development, and operations for the City Administrator’s Office. The intern will support program operations through assignments such as budget model development, financial and policy analysis, research, strategic planning, and program evaluation.

Skills and knowledge you will strengthen in this job include:

  • Local government budget processes & practices
  • Budget & fiscal analyses, methods, projections, and modeling in Excel and other tools
  • Using PowerBI to extract, load, transform and visualize data for different audiences
  • Unique perspective within the City & County of San Francisco

Examples of possible work include:

  • Perform budget/fiscal analyses to answer questions from staff and management team
  • Develop new dashboards or build upon existing dashboards, working with stakeholders understand and design for their needs
  • Apply process improvement techniques to understand and improve a process that spans multiple teams; make recommendations about future systems and practices
  • Work with one or more divisions to develop performance measurement for internal and/or public reporting
  • Participate in skill-sharing sessions and contribute to learning & development opportunities for analysts across City Administrator divisions

Qualifications



MINIMUM

QUALIFICATIONS

:

Education: Possession of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university.

DESIRABLE

QUALIFICATIONS

:

  • MPA or MPP degree in progress
  • Interest in learning and/or leveling up skills in Excel, data wrangling and visualization
  • Curiosity to ask questions and seek out information about division operations, unit processes, and city guidelines.

Hybrid work culture
We work in a hybrid environment, and you will be expected to work in the office 2 days per week (Mondays and Wednesdays). 

Exempt employment
This role is exempt from the San Francisco Civil Service Rules, and employment is at the discretion of the appointing officer for a period of not-to-exceed three years. (Category 18)
