SCOPE OF ROLE
The Urban Farms Intern will participate in a 12-week summer program that introduces the application of horticulture as a therapeutic tool, as an employment pathway, and as a device for nutrition and food-use education for underserved New Yorkers facing a range of challenges. The intern works closely with the Urban Farms team in coordinating program activities while learning therapeutic horticulture techniques in a supported environment.
Paid internship at a rate of $16.75/hr. ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
• Meet and work with staff to understand how therapeutic horticulture is integrated into S:US services.
• Learn basic horticultural techniques and group education practices.
• Perform fieldwork in S:US community garden spaces, interacting directly with people served by S:US.
• Design and lead workshops for people served by S:US with guidance and support from the Urban Farms team.
KEY PERFORMANCE STANDARDS
• Compassion and Sensitivity: Shows genuine interest in others and sensitivity to clients’ and team members’ goals, ideas, concerns, and needs.
• Creativity and Curiosity: Remains constantly open to learning new ideas. Thinks innovatively about challenges or goals.
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
• Demonstrated interest in horticulture, urban agriculture, nutrition, food security/food justice, or social services/human services through academic study, volunteer experience, or other experiences.
• Able to lift 40 pounds.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Upper-level undergraduate students or graduate students preferred.
