Job Description - ATLDOT - Intern (Strategy and Planning-Mobility)

General Description and Classification Standards

The Atlanta Department of Transportation (ATLDOT) was created to improve how Atlanta manages transportation and its right of way. One of the main goals of the department and the city’s Strategic Transportation Plan is to improve safety on the city’s streets and to improve the experience of pedestrians, transit riders, cyclists, and scooter riders.

The Transportation Safety Intern will support ATLDOT’s Vision Zero and Safe Routes to School program efforts. This may include supporting planning, concept design, data analysis, and engagement efforts for transportation projects from conception to implementation, including comprehensive community and public engagement.

This internship opportunity is suited to current undergraduate/graduate students, or new graduates looking to start a career in transportation planning, road safety, multimodal roadway infrastructure, and active transportation.

Supervision Received

This position will receive direct supervision from one or more experienced planners and program managers within ATLDOT.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Actively enrolled in an accredited Urban Planning, Geography, Civil Engineering, Public Policy, Public Administration, Public Health, Environmental Studies or related undergraduate/graduate program;
  • Demonstrated interest in Transportation Planning, or related field and have a strong desire to advance skills related to ATLDOT work and projects;
  • Competent interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience;
  • Identifies opportunities for road & public safety improvements; 
  • Interest in working with communities and stakeholders from diverse backgrounds;
  • Supports citywide and corridor level transportation planning processes including development of conceptual alternatives, and supporting public and stakeholder engagement as well as internal coordination;
  • Supports neighborhood planning studies and development of mobility plans at the neighborhood level including schools;
  • Supports ATLDOT at public meetings or events which may occur after normal business hours;
  • Designs digital presentations and communications materials for internal and public-facing use and utilizing a variety of credible data sources; 
  • Conducts site visits to identify potential alternative configurations for linear transportation projects;
  • Provides technical input, documents research, processes invoices, and attends project meetings as part of providing professional insight and support;
  • Provides assistance to team related to miscellaneous planning and programming needs.

Preferred Knowledge and Skills

  • Effective verbal and written communications
  • Experience with ArcGIS or other mapping software
  • Microsoft Office 365
  • Adobe Creative Suite
  • Knowledge of crash reports and analysis
  • Ability to read and synthesize information from transportation plans and studies
  • Knowledge of multimodal transportation planning
