*APPLICANT MUST BE A CURRENT PART-TIME OR FULL-TIME STUDENT (MINIMUM OF 6 CREDIT HOURS) IN UPCOMING SEMESTER OR IN THE IMMEDIATELY PRECEDING SEMESTER. Position Description: This position is a fisheries intern who will assist managers and biologists conducting fisheries management and research activities on waters in the Upper Missouri River Fisheries Management Area and on Missouri River reservoirs. Activities will include: fish population sampling, angler creel surveys, fish stocking, trap and transfer, basic water chemistry, research projects, and associated lab work. Intern will operate boats and motors, utilize fisheries sampling equipment (gill nets, frame nets, seines, electrofishing equipment, etc.), weigh and measure fish, record and analyze data, and provide preliminary management recommendations. Responsibilities will also include equipment maintenance and repair.
Qualifications: Applicant must be enrolled as a part-time/full-time student at a college, university, or technical institute at the time they apply. By the start of the internship, the student should have completed one year (nine months) of their chosen program. All students are encouraged to apply, but preference may be given to applicants with a standing of junior/senior, South Dakota residents, and students of South Dakota institutions. Applicants must have the ability to perform strenuous duties in adverse weather conditions, operate boats and motors, maintain equipment, operate vehicles, and maneuver boat trailers. A valid driver's license is required. Preference will be given to applicants with knowledge of fish species, basic fisheries management, fisheries equipment, sampling gear, and computer data input skills.
