Job Description - Academic Ceremonies Usher Commencement 2026 (AY 25-26 900850)

This is a Middlebury student Level B position paying $14.95 per hour

Job Description: Ushering for Academic Ceremonies including, but not limited to: Convocation, Baccalaureate, Commencement, Phi Beta Kappa Inductions, Inaugurations, February Celebration or any other high profile ceremonial events.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

·       Availability for either early arrival or late departure from campus, depending upon the ceremony dates;

·       Attend rehearsal prior to the actual event and receive specific instructions/written guidelines;

·       Must be reliable, responsible and punctual;

·       Appropriate attire is required at all events;

·       Meet with Feb Celebration coordinator to receive your assignment, and necessary instructions;

·       Must complete crowd management training (if you are not already trained);

·       Assist in pre-arrival check for venue safety compliance as per crowd management guidelines;

·       Provide extra assistance to guests if necessary;

·       Enforce policies regarding cameras/recording, smoking, food/beverages, latecomer seating, crowd management enforcement, etc.;

·       Provide emergency announcement when required;

·       Remain after each event to help guide guests, and provide any necessary instructions to their next activity, and collect programs;

·       Assist in gathering lost items to deliver to lost & found after the event;

·       Do not leave until released by the event supervisor;

·       Ability to lift up to 25 lbs.

  • Must attend crowd management training (if you are not already trained) – Oracle;
  • Assist in pre-arrival check for venue safety compliance as per crowd management guidelines;
  • Provide assistance to elderly guest if necessary;
  • Enforce policies regarding cameras/recording, smoking, food/beverages, latecomer seating, crowd management enforcement, etc.;
  • Provide emergency announcement when required;
  • Remain after each event to help guide guests, and provide any necessary instructions to their next activity, and collect programs.
  • Assist in gathering lost items to deliver to lost & found after the event;
  • Do not leave until released by the event supervisor
  • Provide administrative tasks for events such as bagging programs, putting up posters.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs.

Student Employment Eligibility:

Unless restricted by certain visa status, all students with an active status for the semester are eligible for jobs on campus.

Students on leave or withdrawn are not eligible to work in student employment positions until the semester in which they return. If you are currently withdrawn or on leave you are eligible to be employed in staff positions.

Some may be restricted due to financial aid status. International students (non-resident aliens) may not work off campus unless they have applied for and received work authorization from the United States government. (An F-1 visa does not give work authorization.) Off campus work study positions are available only to U.S. citizens on financial aid with a federal work study component.

Student are not eligible to work remotely from International locations.

Hour Limitations:

All student employees are limited to working no more than 20 hours per week in on campus jobs during the academic year (this includes exam periods). The only exception is when there is a full week when school is not in session. Specifically: February recess, Spring recess, and full weeks of December or summer recess. During these time periods only, students can work up to 40 hours per week. International Students: Visa restrictions prohibit international students from exceeding 20 hours of work per academic calendar week.
