Job Description - Architecture Intern - Summer 2026

This is a paid internship, range of $22/hr - $39/hr (depending on role and qualifications) for those currently pursuing undergraduate degrees and higher rates for those currently pursuing graduate level degrees.

Tentative 2026 Internship Dates:



  • Semester students: May 18th to July 24th    

  • Quarter students:  June 15th to August 21st


DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW


The Sound Transit Architecture Group collaboratively oversees the design development and construction of public transit stations and maintenance facilities. Working with the consulting architects and engineering groups, the Architecture Group coordinates agency needs into building designs. The group touches all facets of Sound Transit’s facilities throughout the Puget Sound region – Link, Sounder, ST Express, and Tacoma Link. The Architectural Intern will have an opportunity to be a part of the team that focuses on the passenger experience through station design.


PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES


The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification, only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.


JOB DUTIES:



  • Work with the Architecture Team and agency stakeholders with a focus on information and data collection, as well as learning about the overall process of station design and construction.

  • The internship may entail researching designs for existing and new stations to extract information and data which will inform future standards and assist in operational needs.

  • The internship will primarily involve office work but may include field work such as construction site visits.


POTENTIAL PROJECTS:



  • Perform architectural design or product research, and special projects to support the design of ST stations and facilities.

  • Collaborate on a group project for post-occupancy evaluation of selected transit facilities to inform future agency work.

  • Assist with field observation over the internship’s duration, including construction site visits.

  • Documentation of built facilities and assisting in organization of ST’s project library.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:


Applicants must be a current college student in good academic standing, enrolled in an accredited associate, bachelor's or graduate degree program in Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Urban Design, Planning or relevant two-year certificate.          


ADDITIONAL SKILLS:



  • Demonstrated understanding of building construction elements and design features.

  • Working knowledge of Revit, AutoCAD and Bluebeam Revu preferred.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:




  • Ability to work autonomously within a team environment.




  • Strong analytical abilities and attention to detail.




  • Demonstrated ability to solve problems and work collaboratively.




  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.




  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.




  • Knowledge of reading construction drawings.




  • Interest in public transportation or infrastructure.




  • General familiarity with building codes and design standards.




PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT:



  • Work is performed in a standard office environment with occasional visits to construction sites.

  • Subject to standing, walking, bending, reaching, stooping, and lifting of objects up to 25 pounds; may occasionally be exposed to dangerous machinery when visiting job sites during construction and when working in the field.
