ORGANIZATIONAL BACKGROUND

National Housing Trust (NHT) has been dedicated to creating and preserving affordable housing for almost 40 years. We build, preserve, and finance affordable housing and use that expertise to inform and advance resident-focused solutions to strengthen the broader affordable housing industry.

NHT has a staff of 60+ across five program areas: Policy, Lending, Real Estate Development, Community Outreach and Impact, and Energy Solutions. Our hallmark is our cross-functional, integrated approach to innovating, demonstrating, and amplifying solutions to the affordable housing crisis in the U.S.

ABOUT THE ASSET MANAGEMENT TEAM

The Asset Management team is part of our Real Estate department and is responsible for ensuring the long-term physical and financial health of our affordable housing portfolio. The team monitors property performance, partners closely with property managers and external stakeholders, and implements strategies that support the mission and impact of each property.

POSITION

NHT is seeking a part-time summer intern to support the Asset Management team. The intern will report to the Asset Management Associate and will assist with building and maintaining NHT’s databases related to portfolio records and processes for data management. This is a Washington, DC-based position. The internship qualifies for a hybrid work schedule. Some tasks may require full in-person availability, especially when handling physical files or records. The internship will run for approximately 10–12 weeks, ideally beginning in late May or early June, with a flexible end date in August based on academic schedules.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Maintain and organize digital records in an electronic filing system, ensuring proper naming conventions, version control, and backups.

  • Review digital copies of scanned records for accuracy, legibility, and completeness, and make adjustments or re-scans as necessary.

  • Updating storage inventory and methods as necessary.

Document/File Management

  • Assist with creating, updating and maintaining compliance trackers or implementing relevant software.

  • Assist with documenting work flow processes.

  • Assist with clean up of shared file storage to improve cross-departmental use.

 Data Collection and Entry

  • Compiling monthly rent collections data

  • Working with property management to access and collect portfolio reporting demographic data, and collaborating with internal departments to store and share same.

DOES THIS SOUND LIKE YOU?

Qualifications Include:

  • An undergraduate or graduate student in good academic standing, preferably studying business administration, real estate, or urban planning.

  • Commitment to NHT’s mission, including dedication to helping low-income families create and access opportunities to thrive.

  • Dependable and organized, capable of completing assignments in a timely and thoughtful manner.

  • High attention to detail; must establish confidence that work product is accurate and complete.

  • Ability to lift and move up to 50 pound boxes

  •  Strong computer aptitude skills, including knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite Programs

  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational communications skills, including verbal and written.

  •  Collaborative work ethic and positive attitude.

COMPENSATION

This is a paid internship with a competitive hourly rate of $18–$22 per hour, commensurate with experience and academic level. Interns will work a minimum of 24  hours per week, with the possibility to sign on to a full 40 hours per week depending on candidate availability and organizational need.
