Job Description - Behavior Professional Intern

Behavior Professional Intern

Department: Services
Reports to: Behavior Support Team Lead

Cornerstone Valley, Inc. is a 24-hour residential provider agency supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD/DD) and co-occurring mental health diagnoses. We are seeking motivated candidates for our Behavior Professional Intern (BP Intern) program. This structured, hands-on training role is designed as a pathway to becoming a full-time Behavior Professional (BP) within Cornerstone Valley.

The BP Intern program provides guided, real-world experience through a structured learning model emphasizing observation, partial participation, and independent execution. Interns actively engage in core responsibilities of a Behavior Professional while receiving close supervision, coaching, and continuous evaluation to ensure readiness for independent practice.

What You’ll Do

As a BP Intern, you will:

  • Progress through a Three-Stage Learning Model (Observe → Participate → Independently Execute).

  • Attend and participate in ISP, school, and team meetings.

  • Develop skills in reviewing and managing General Event Reports (GERs) and Behavior Data Tracking (BDT).

  • Learn to apply Oregon Needs Assessment (ONA) processes.

  • Receive Oregon Intervention System (OIS) training and practice application in real scenarios.

  • Train in key BP functions including writing and implementing Positive Behavior Support Plans (PBSPs), facilitating staff meetings, creating training records, and conducting in-home observations.

  • Receive weekly one-on-one supervision and daily feedback to support your growth.

  • Be evaluated regularly through structured checklists and milestone reviews.

What We’re Looking For

You may qualify through one of the following pathways:

  • (a) Board-Certified Behavior Analyst® (BCBA®) with 1 year of experience using positive behavior supports with individuals with IDD/DD.

  • (b) Master’s degree in psychology, sociology, human services, education, social work, or related field, plus 1 year of experience with positive behavior supports.

  • (c) Bachelor’s degree in the above fields plus 3 years of experience with positive behavior supports.

  • (d) At least 6 years of professional behavior services experience using positive behavior supports prior to January 1, 2021.

Additional Requirements:

  • Valid Oregon Driver’s License, insured vehicle, and acceptable driving record.

  • Ability to pass a criminal background check.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.

  • Strong organizational, communication, and time-management skills.

  • Professional integrity, respect for boundaries, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

  • Desire to learn, grow, and eventually transition into a Behavior Professional role.

Working Conditions

  • Work takes place in office settings, client homes, and community locations.

  • May involve frequent travel to Cornerstone Valley program sites.

  • Physical requirements include the ability to lift/carry up to 30 lbs. and maneuver up to 75 lbs.

  • May occasionally assist in crisis intervention with individuals who exhibit challenging behaviors (non-aversive interventions only).

  • Frequent interruptions, handwashing, and the use of personal protective equipment may be required.

Why Join Cornerstone Valley?

This internship provides a structured career pathway into a full-time Behavior Professional role. With close mentorship, real-world practice, and progressive responsibility, the BP Intern role is designed to prepare you for long-term success as a leader in behavior support.
