Job Description - Clinical Externship

Description

We are currently accepting applications Interships/Externships for 2025-2026 and will be reviewing applications and conducting an interview process that aligns with NYNJADOT-PSYDNYS Guidelines. To review the dates and modalities, see our interview process below. Any applications received after February 13th will be reviewed following Match Day.

Start Date: Rolling start dates in June-September 2025, exact date to be determined with hiring manager

Internship/Externship Supervisor: Lead Psychologist

Classification: Externship/Internship, Part-Time, In-Person, Unpaid

Term: Summer 2025-Summer 2026 (minimum of 10 month commitment)

Hours: See clarification under 'Externship Eligibility' 

Location: MPG Offices (Upper West Side Office and/or Long Island City)

Internship/Externship Summary

We are looking for highly skilled and personable graduate-level clinical externs to learn from our team of mental health and testing professionals who specialize in evidence-based treatments, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Parent Child Interaction Therapy, Parent Management Training and Applied Behavior Analysis to provide support to children, adolescents and families experiencing anxiety, OCD, mood disorders, disruptive behavior, ASD and ADHD. Externs will receive the required individual and/or group supervision from a licensed psychologist/social worker. We are an excellent training site for students that prioritize direct care learning opportunities, 1:1 supervision, and growth opportunities.

Internship/Externship Training Objectives

  • Fulfill externship training requirements outlined by the associated educational institute in which the student is enrolled
  • Provide evidence-based methods to assess and treat a diverse caseload of children, adolescents and adults utilizing CBT-oriented modalities, including family consultation and support, where feasible
  • Case conceptualization, diagnosis, treatment planning and case management
  • Opportunities to assist and facilitate group counseling
  • Actively seek parent and/or patient feedback regarding programming and therapy goals
  • Regularly meet with supervisor for supervision sessions
  • Attend department and trainee team meetings, in-service programs, didactics and staff development activities
  • Collaborate with supervisors, colleagues, and collateral providers
  • Training in assessment, interpretation, report writing and feedback (doctoral externs only)
  • Consult with community resources
  • Utilize practice software for documentation
  • Display solid time management, writing, organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrate alignment with the company mission, vision, and core values

Requirements

Internship/Externship Eligibility

Education: 

  • Enrolled in a graduate program in Clinical, School, or Applied Psychology, Mental Health Counseling, Marital and Family Therapy, or Social Work
  • Doctoral candidates are preferred

Experience:

  • A minimum of 1-2 years of clinical experience utilizing evidence-based interventions (e.g., CBT, PMT, ERP, PCIT) to treat children and adolescents with anxiety, mood disorders, ODD, and ADHD, as well as their families.
  • Experience with Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) and psychological testing is preferred.
  • Experience working with the ASD population is preferred.

Availability:

  • Minimum of 20 hours/week across 3 days, including:
  • Two weekdays (after-school blocks, approximately 3–8 PM, and at least one daytime block, 9 AM–3 PM, for testing)
  • One weekend day (options include: Friday until approximately 8 PM, Saturday – full day starting at approximately 9 AM, or Sunday – full day starting at approximately 9 AM)
  • Weekly breakdown of hours: 10 hours of direct services, 10 hours of indirect services

Commitment:

  • Must be available to participate in orientation and training between July and August of 2025.
  • A minimum commitment of 10 months, through mid-July 2026, is required; year-long commitments are preferred.

Placement Process (Following NYNJADOT guidelines):

  • Complete the application by filling out the online application, submitting a CV, two letters of recommendation (via email to [email protected]), and Cover Letter that explains why you are pursuing a career in the mental health field, how your previous experience and education have prepared you for this externship, and what you hope to learn during your externship.
  • Complete a phone screen with our Director of Recruiting between January 22nd-February 13th.
  • Submit work sample (Intake summary, session note, treatment plan, termination summary, observation write-up, etc.) within 2 business days of phone screen.
  • Virtual Interview with one of our Senior/Lead Psychologists between between January 22nd-February 13th.
  • In-person Interview with Clinical Director of Mental Health and Testing Services at our Upper West Side office between January 22nd-February 25th.
  • Internship/Externship placement offer occurs on Match Day, March 3rd, 2025.
  • Complete onboarding process
  • Meet with team of supervising clinicians
