Construction Intern

Drake is seeking motivated Construction Interns to join our team for Summer 2027. Interns will gain hands on experience in one of our divisions, including Paving, Civil, General Contracting, Highway, or Materials.

Construction Interns will work alongside project managers, superintendents, field crews, and other team members to learn about project planning, field operations, safety, and the daily responsibilities involved in completing construction projects.

These positions include both office and field experience. Interns should be dependable, eager to learn, and willing to assist with hands-on work as needed.

Key Responsibilities

• Shadow project managers and superintendents to learn how projects are planned, coordinated, and completed.


• Gain experience within an assigned division, including Paving, Civil, General Contracting, Highway, or Materials.


• Assist field crews with general labor and daily jobsite activities as assigned.


• Help with material handling, jobsite cleanup, tools, and equipment.


• Assist with project schedules, daily reports, documentation, and progress tracking.


• Learn how to read construction plans, specifications, and other project documents.


• Assist with quantity measurements, jobsite photos, and documentation of completed work.


• Attend project meetings, safety meetings, and jobsite inspections.


• Observe and learn about estimating, scheduling, quality control, material production, and project closeout.


• Communicate professionally with employees, subcontractors, vendors, and project teams.


• Follow all company safety policies and wear required personal protective equipment.


• Participate in training, company activities, and internship assignments.


• Perform other construction, administrative, and operational duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a construction management, engineering, building science, or related program preferred.


• Previous construction experience is helpful but not required.


• Strong interest in construction, infrastructure, or material production.


• Dependable, punctual, and willing to learn.


• Ability to communicate effectively and work as part of a team.


• Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Office.


• Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation may be required.


• Ability to travel to assigned projects or facilities.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to stand, walk, bend, climb, and work outdoors for extended periods.


• Ability to lift and carry materials, tools, or equipment as required.


• Ability to work around active construction operations, heavy equipment, machinery, noise, dust, and changing weather conditions.
