Description

Linda Hall Library, one of the world’s foremost independent research libraries devoted to science, engineering, and technology, is seeking an Education Intern to support its Programs and Education team. The opportunity is in partnership with the UMKC School of Humanities and Social Sciences and funded by the Mellon Humanities Internship Program.

Schedule and Duration

  • Fall 2025
  • Part-Time (10 hours for 16 weeks), in-person internship
  • Paid, $15.00 an hour

JOB TITLE: Education Intern

CLASSIFICATION: Hourly, Non-Exempt

DEPARTMENT: Programs and Education

REPORTS TO: Education Specialist

JOB PURPOSE 

Reporting to the Education Specialist, the Education Intern supports the Library’s 2025 fall education and programming activities. The Education Intern gains hands-on experience in carrying out education programs and assists with developing educational programs and materials.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS 

  1. Program Development: Create an education program or material that ties into the Library’s collection, arboretum, or Kansas City Invention Convention (KCIC)
  2. Educational Outreach: Assist with KCIC outreach in Kansas City metro classrooms 
  3. Educator Communication and Support: Support teacher communications with invention convention educators and assist with Invention Education Professional Development
  4. Informal Education: Assist with class visits to the Library
  5. Content Creation: Collaborate with marketing team on KCIC social media content
  6. Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Required

  • Enrolled in a degree program with the UMKC School of Humanities and Social Sciences.
  • Obtained a High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to engage with diverse audiences and foster a welcoming environment
  • Strong communication and presentation skills, with experience in education or public speaking
  • Attention to detail and excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills.
  • Flexible schedule that may include some evenings and Saturdays to assist with program days.
  • Works both independently and collaboratively with a team.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Teams, Outlook, Word, Excel)

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS 

Rarely (0-10%):

  • Visiting classrooms, nearby partner organizations or institutions for meetings or programs. 
  • Engaging in community outreach programs to promote educational initiatives.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • This position is generally sedentary, and movement throughout the area is required sometimes.
  • The ability to have continuous oral and written communication with co-workers and supervisors is essential.
  • Repetitive movements, occasional lifting of up to 15 pounds, reaching, pushing, lifting, stooping and the ability to read a computer screen, detect color-coding and read fine print will be expected.

WORK CONDITIONS

The work is primarily performed in an office setting. This is not a remote position.

The position may require travel to various locations and work in diverse environments, including schools, community centers, and outdoor settings.

The Education Intern may occasionally need to work evenings and weekends as requested.
