Job Description - Embedded Firmware Engineer Intern

Embedded Firmware Engineering Intern

Location: San Jose, CA
Company: Trackonomy

About Trackonomy

Trackonomy is pioneering the next-generation operating system for the connected world, leveraging smart labels, multi-radio IoT devices, agent-based intelligence, and the Sentient AI platform to deliver end-to-end visibility, automation, control, and remediation across global supply chains. Our vertically integrated solutions transform physical assets into intelligent, communicative objects, addressing mission-critical challenges in logistics, healthcare, cold chain, industrial operations, manufacturing, and beyond.

We are building a new class of connected devices that give physical objects the ability to sense, communicate, and interact in real time. Our platform combines custom hardware, embedded firmware, wireless networking, and cloud infrastructure to power applications across logistics, industrial systems, utilities, healthcare, and government.

Our devices operate at a massive scale in the physical world, solving difficult problems in low-power systems, wireless communication, and distributed sensing.

Backed by leading investors including Kleiner Perkins and 8VC, Trackonomy is delivering a connected world where physical objects are fully intelligent and interactive.

The Role

We are looking for an Embedded Firmware Engineering Intern to help develop the software that powers our next-generation IoT devices.

This is a hands-on engineering role where you will work directly with hardware, microcontrollers, wireless modules, and sensors. Interns are treated like engineers on the team and contribute to real systems that ship to customers.

You will collaborate closely with firmware, hardware, and systems engineers to design, build, test, and debug embedded software running on resource-constrained devices.

What You’ll Work On

Projects may include:

  • Developing firmware for ARM-based microcontrollers

  • Writing embedded C/C++ drivers for sensors, radios, and peripherals

  • Integrating wireless communication modules such as BLE, LoRa, or cellular IoT

  • Supporting hardware bring-up and board-level debugging

  • Building test frameworks and automation for firmware validation

  • Debugging embedded systems using tools such as JTAG, oscilloscopes, and logic analyzers

  • Optimizing power consumption and performance for battery-powered devices

  • Contributing to firmware architecture, testing, and code reviews

  • Building AI powered tools, automations and dashboards

You will gain exposure to the entire embedded stack, from device firmware to wireless networking and system integration.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field

  • Strong programming skills in C or C++

  • Coursework or project experience with embedded systems or microcontrollers

  • Familiarity with digital communication interfaces such as SPI, I2C, or UART

  • Strong debugging and problem-solving skills

  • Interest in building real-world hardware and embedded systems

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with ARM Cortex-M microcontrollers

  • Familiarity with wireless technologies (BLE, LoRa, Wi-Fi, or cellular IoT)

  • Experience using debugging tools such as logic analyzers, oscilloscopes, or JTAG debuggers

  • Experience building embedded projects, robotics systems, or hardware prototypes

  • Familiarity with Python or scripting tools for testing and automation

  • Interest in low-power systems and battery-powered devices

What Makes This Internship Unique

  • Work directly on real production hardware and firmware

  • Exposure to wireless IoT systems deployed at scale

  • Collaborate with experienced engineers across hardware, firmware, and cloud systems

  • See how embedded devices integrate into large distributed systems

  • Contribute code that ships to real-world deployments

Ideal Candidate

The strongest candidates typically have built things such as:

  • Embedded projects using microcontrollers

  • Robotics or autonomous systems

  • Custom sensor systems

  • Wireless devices or IoT projects

We value engineers who enjoy building, debugging, and understanding systems from the hardware up.
