Pay Grade: $16.25 per hour


Location: Marion Public Works


FLSA Classification: Non-Exempt



Job Summary


The Engineering Tech Intern position is for college students in engineering, (Civil/Construction Preferred) for the duration of the summer, May - August. This position supports department engineers and inspectors with a variety of tasks and responsibilities. Tasks including construction inspection, materials testing, pavement and sidewalk inspections and inventories, utility and traffic inventories, survey, and other engineering related duties.



Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities



  • Construction Inspection on City construction projects including roadway, sidewalk, trails, sewers, and subdivisions.

  • Maintains precise daily records of inspection findings, quantities, and construction progress.

  • Conducts quality control tests and inspections to ensure public improvements are being constructed, installed, reconstructed, or repaired in conformance with applicable ordinances, specifications, and standards. 

  • Drafts or sketches preliminary and final drawings as guides for drafters or engineering designers in Autodesk Civil 3d.

  • Operates global position system units, levels, and total station equipment in performing location, topographic, cadastral and construction staking survey work.

  • Represents the City Engineer as a resident inspector of public improvement projects.



Required Experience, Education and/or Certifications



  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and specifications.

  • Ability to make accurate technical computations involving basic math, trigonometry, and geometry.

  • Ability to maintain an organized filing system.

  • Ability to understand and implement oral and written communications.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public and fellow employees.

  • Ability to keep and maintain department records in an organized and orderly way. 

  • Ability to use computers, including word-processing, spreadsheet, and specialized financial software applications.



Physical Requirements and Working Conditions



  • Ability to bend, stoop, lift and carry up to 75 pounds for sampling and testing construction materials.

  • Ability to work long hours outdoors, occasionally under adverse weather conditions.

  • Physical ability to traverse variable terrain conditions not accessible by vehicle including, but not limited to steep slopes, unlevel grades, and heavily vegetated areas for the purpose of site review, surveying, and construction inspections. 

  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English to communicate effectively and professionally with fellow employees, Boards and the general public via telephone, in written form or face-to-face.

  • Ability to operate computer keyboard, calculator, telephone, typewriter, photocopier, and similar electronic and manual office machines.

  • Works in an office environment.

  • Works flexible hours and overtime when needed.



Qualifications



  • High school diploma or equivalent degree.

  • College enrollment in the pursuit of degree in engineering field.

  • Any acceptable combination of education, training and experience that provides the above knowledge, abilities and skills may be substituted. 

  • Valid Driver's License.
