Summer Youth Internship Program

As a result of taking part in the Summer Youth Internship Program, interns will gain authentic work experience and develop transferable skills while contributing to our mission to inspire a lifelong love of science in everyone. Please note you must routinely work Wednesdays with two additional weekday shifts. Important Program Dates:

Position Summary

The Youth Exhibit Content Development Internship provides training and practical experience in science research, science education, and science communication. Interns will work under the guidance of exhibit staff to contribute to projects related to the creation or refurbishment of Museum exhibit experiences. Project work will include investigating science topics, developing educational content, and collecting feedback on exhibit prototypes from visitors. Interns will have the opportunity to expand their science research, communication and education skills by interfacing directly with the public, critically assessing and translating scientific work for different audiences, assisting in data collection, and collaborating across teams with diverse expertise. Interns will work closely with a team of research, development, evaluation, and education professionals dedicated to creating fun and engaging exhibit-based science learning experiences for the public.

What You’ll Accomplish

• Develop familiarity with best practices in science research, science communication, and science education that are relevant to the current work of the department


• Support on-going exhibit content development projects by sourcing and synthesizing scientific research and media; drafting and revising exhibit text for diverse Museum audiences; and contributing ideas and feedback in exhibit team meetings


• Participate in and facilitate structured conversations about Museum exhibit development with Museum professionals and community members, in one-on-one, small group, and large group settings


• Assist in testing new educational strategies and offerings that support science learning through exhibits, by recruiting visitors to participate and share their feedback, supporting data collection, and discussing findings with exhibit teams


• Engage visitors to the Museum’s exhibit halls in hands-on science activities


• Exhibit projects, STEM topics, and specific intern responsibilities will be curated by lead content developers depending on institutional priorities at the time of the internship.

What We’re Looking For (Competencies)

Curiosity & Learning: Demonstrated interest in science research, science communication, and/or science education practice. Open to learning new skills and applying them to the development and evaluation of Museum experiences.

Communication: Demonstrated strong interpersonal and communication skills (both written and verbal). Maintains high standards for proactive and consistent communication with colleagues and mentors.

Collaboration: Able to work both independently and in a dynamic group setting that requires collaboration with diverse members of the Museum’s Exhibits, Research, and Collections team. Demonstrated experience contributing to a team.

Commitment to Museum Values: Demonstrated interest in supporting the development and evaluation of experiences that promote access, belonging, and culture.

Detail-oriented: Demonstrated ability to manage tasks with both accuracy and thoroughness. Able to organize and track responsibilities effectively, ensuring consistency and quality in work.

Special Skills:

Candidates with Spanish language skills (written and/or verbal) or American Sign Language skills
