Job Description - Facility Services Student Intern (9030)

Work for Our Water Resources.


Help protect one of Florida’s most vital resources — water — with a career at the Southwest Florida Water Management District (District).


The District is a government agency whose mission is to protect water resources, minimize flood risks, and ensure the public’s water needs are met. We serve a population of nearly 6 million people in west-central Florida as directed by state law.

Using a customer-driven team approach, our General Services Bureau performs the important work behind the scenes that keeps our entire organization operating smoothly as we manage the water supply and protect our water quality. You will be provided with an opportunity to gain experience in areas such as buildings, grounds, and facilities maintenance. In joining our team, you’ll play an important role in enhancing the results to ensure a brighter future for the environment of Florida.


 This internship opportunity is not eligible for remote work, all work will be conducted in office at the District Brooksville, FL office.


 


For helping to maintain our valuable water resources as a student, we offer:










  • Training and Development: Having a successful career takes more than technical training. The District helps our staff develop additional skill sets, such as emotional intelligence, time management, customer service, conflict resolution, communications and more. As an intern, you are eligible to attend these on-site trainings.

The program includes classes on health and fitness topics, District campus walking routes, a fitness challenge, tobacco-cessation resources, an ergonomics program, discount programs, incentives and other resources. Participation in wellness program activities is voluntary. 



Compensation: $15.00


Essential Functions



  • Assist Facilities staff in the ongoing maintenance of District facilities and grounds, including lawn mowing, pressure washing, exterior building maintenance, landscaping and furniture moves.

  • Provide apprentice-level assistance to Facilities staff on more complex plumbing, electrical, HVAC, mechanical or carpentry jobs.

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.


Work environments vary by assigned business unit. Must have ability to lift and carry 30 pounds while walking. May be required to occasionally lift up to 50 pounds. May be exposed to extremely hot, humid weather conditions, mosquitoes and other pests. May be exposed to materials that are classified as hazardous, VOC, or herbicide products with the use of specialized PPE equipment. May be exposed to elements including sun and rain during entire work period. Must be able to bend, squat and climb on a regular basis. May be required to operate motor vehicles mowers, man lifts, and miscellaneous landscape and construction equipment for extended periods.


Required Credentials for Facility Services Student Intern Opportunity



  • Be at least part-time current enrollment in high school, an accredited college, university, or other recognized educational or vocational program

  • Maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5 for undergraduate students or minimum GPA of 3.0 for graduate students

  • Provide a copy of Official school transcript within 30 days of employment

  • Upload Unofficial Transcript to application or profile

  • Valid driver’s license


Preferred Credentials for Facility Services Student Intern Opportunity



  • Basic understanding of construction, maintenance and proper use of hand and power tools

  • Preferred Degrees: Engineering, Construction Management, Vocational, Technical

  • Preferred Degree Level: Undergraduate 


Additional Details


This position is typically scheduled to work no more than 25 hours per week out of the Brooksville office. Student Internship positions are not eligible for insured medical benefits. 


Travel Required


Yes. Some travel, using District vehicle, within District's coverage area.
