Job Description - Fisheries Intern

Position Summary:


Gloucester Marine Genomics Institute (GMGI) is a pioneering marine research institute that addresses critical challenges facing our oceans, human health, and the environment through innovative scientific research and education. 


 


The Fisheries Intern, under the supervision of the Fisheries Research Scientist, is responsible for processing genetic samples in the lab and analyzing data to help meet project and team goals. The internship position will last 12 weeks. Students currently enrolled in and/or recent graduates of Bachelor’s or Master’s degree are eligible to apply.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:


Perform a variety of duties to support GMGI’s research goals with a particular focus on fisheries related projects.


·       Participate in field collections for fisheries and eDNA samples, including dissection and harvesting tissues (muscle, gills, hepatopancreas, etc.)


·       Design and execute experiments using molecular biology/genomics techniques including DNA/RNA isolations and quantification, PCR, qPCR, RT-qPCR, and Next-generation sequencing


·       Generate and analyze data with high level of proficiency and productivity using a variety of bioinformatic and statistical approaches appropriate to particular research questions


·       Prepare reports


·       Background reading suited to individual projects


·       Preparation of results for presentation to scientific or lay audiences as requested


Other duties as assigned




Education and/or Work Experience Requirements:


·       Currently pursuing or completed Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in biology, molecular biology, marine biology, or related fields


·       Capable of planning and executing experiments with minimal supervision


·       Familiarity with MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint and willingness to learn new computer software for data analysis


·       Capable of working in team and independent settings


·       Excellent writing and documentation skills
