Job Description - Gateway Routesetting Support

At Movement, our core values of growth, connection, and integrity are at the heart of everything we do. We're not just a climbing gym - we're a community that's dedicated to transforming lives through climbing, yoga, and fitness and sharing that vision with as many people as we can. As the country’s largest network of climbing gyms, we're building an extraordinary team that's committed to growing our business, our value to our members, our future customers, and our industry.

By expanding our community, we can create rewarding career paths for our team members, continually improve the customer experience, build a sustainable business for the long term, and give back to the communities we are all a part of. We’re looking for passionate, resilient, and business-minded enthusiasts who share our values and want to join us in not only leading the climbing industry but defining it!

Gateway Routesetting Support

Movement is committed to building diverse routesetting teams that reflect the communities we serve. The Gateway Routesetting Support role is designed as an entry point for individuals who are curious about the craft of routesetting and want to learn more about how a professional setting program operates.

This is a temporary, part-time role intended to provide exposure to the routesetting process while supporting the team through foundational, non-setting work. Gateway Routesetting Support positions typically run for approximately three months and average 2-6 hours per week based on facility needs. While completion of the program may open future opportunities, advancement is not guaranteed.

This role focuses on supporting the routesetting team through foundational, non-setting work while providing exposure to the workflows, standards, and decision-making that shape our climbing product. It is intentionally designed for applicants with little to no prior routesetting experience and offers a thoughtful way to explore a potential future in routesetting.

What This Role Is and Isn't

Gateway Routesetting Support is a support and learning role, not a setting position. While you'll work closely with the routesetting team and gain insight into the craft, this role does not include setting routes or boulder problems.

The focus is on:

  • Learning how the Routesetting Program functions day to day

  • Supporting production through essential maintenance and forerunning tasks

  • Building foundational skills, habits, and understanding of the workflow

What you'll be doing:

  • Learn and adhere to all workplace safety expectations and requirements

  • Wash and sort holds and volumes using approved methods and equipment

  • Assist with work zone preparation and clean-up

  • Maintain organization of the hold room and routesetting equipment

  • Climb and test boulder problems as directed to support grading, consistency, and quality

  • Learn the criteria used to assess the quality and accessibility of our routesetting product

  • Be open to feedback and work collaboratively with the routesetting team

  • Assist with additional tasks or projects as assigned

Note: This is not an Apprentice Routesetting position. You will not be trained on or permitted to participate in work-at-height tasks.

What Success Looks Like

  • You approach each day with an eagerness to learn and a willingness to ask thoughtful questions

  • You consistently follow workplace safety expectations and best practices

  • You demonstrate reliability, strong work ethic, and attention to detail

  • You work collaboratively with the routesetting team and are receptive to feedback

  • You develop a clear understanding of Movement's routesetting workflow, standards, and values

  • You contribute positively to the team environment and support the quality of the climbing product

Bonus points for:

  • Lead climbing proficiency

  • Ability to climb at least 5.12 and/or V6

We believe that diverse backgrounds and experiences make our team stronger. Even if your background doesn’t 100% match the qualifications listed above, we encourage you to apply and share how your unique experience and transferable skills would make you successful in this role.

Additional Details

  • This role is based in Santa Clara – applicants will be assigned this primary location but may have opportunities to support other locations as agreed upon.

  • This is a part-time position.

  • Starting pay at $20.25-21.25/hour, flexibility available based on experience.

  • Benefits include free membership, in-gym discounts, guest visits, potential 401(k) eligibility, paid time off, health benefits.

  • Internal candidates who apply should be in excellent standing with their current director/management team.

  • New hires will complete a screening process.

  • Scheduled shift times may vary from week to week or month to month.
