JOB SUMMARY:
At Saginaw Valley State University, the Center for Community Engagement and Experiential Learning (CCEEL) supports meaningful partnerships, civic engagement, and high-impact learning experiences that connect students with the community through experiential education opportunities. CCEEL seeks a Graduate Assistant to support the work of the Center for Community Engagement and Experiential Learning (CCEEL). As departmental efforts continue to expand, this role will help sustain and deepen community engagement and experiential learning initiatives in ways that are meaningful for both students and community partners.
This position is designed to provide a meaningful professional development experience for a graduate student interested in higher education, student engagement, experiential learning, leadership development, nonprofit work, or community partnership initiatives. The Graduate Assistant will contribute to community engagement programming, assessment efforts, outreach initiatives, and student support while developing professional skills in collaboration, communication, event coordination, program management, and civic engagement practices.
This appointment is for a maximum of two calendar years.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Support the coordination of community-based and service-learning opportunities.
Collaborate with faculty integrating experiential learning and community engagement into academic coursework.
Assist with maintaining and strengthening relationships with community partners and external organizations.
Support communication and outreach efforts related to CCEEL programming and initiatives.
Assist with tracking participation, student engagement, outcomes, and program impact data.
Contribute to assessment, reporting, and continuous improvement efforts.
Assist with planning and implementation of programs, workshops, trainings, and special events connected to CCEEL initiatives.
Help maintain program records, resource materials, and documentation.
Support student engagement efforts and provide assistance to students participating in experiential learning opportunities.
Participate in departmental meetings, student success initiatives, and related activities as assigned.
Maintain confidentiality and professionalism when handling student and university information.
Perform other duties as assigned.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
General supervision is provided by the Associate Provost for Academic Affairs.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
Currently admitted to a graduate program at SVSU or eligible and intending to apply upon accepting the offer. Graduate programs qualifying for this position include the Master of Public Administration (MPA), Master of Business Administration (MBA), or other related graduate programs approved by Academic Affairs.
Good academic standing.
Strong written, verbal, interpersonal, and organizational communication skills.
Ability to work independently while also collaborating effectively within a team environment.
Interest in community engagement, experiential learning, higher education, nonprofit work, student development, or civic engagement initiatives.
Ability to effectively interact with students, faculty, staff, and community partners from diverse backgrounds.
Strong organizational and time management skills with attention to detail.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
Ability to maintain professionalism and confidentiality when handling sensitive information.
Experience and ability to positively interact with all members of the campus community.
Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism.
Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without accommodations.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Prior experience with community engagement, service-learning, volunteer coordination, student leadership, or event planning.
Experience working in higher education, nonprofit organizations, or community-based programs.
Familiarity with program assessment, student engagement tracking, or outreach initiatives.
Experience facilitating workshops, trainings, or student engagement activities.
Strong presentation, outreach, and relationship-building skills.
TUITION ELIGIBILITY & TAX IMPLICATIONS:
Graduate Assistantships include a tuition and fee waiver of up to 12 credit hours per semester (maximum 30 per academic year), funded by the SVSU central budget.
Full-time enrollment (9 credits or more) is in the Fall and Winter semesters, with minimal exceptions available.
Per IRS regulations, tuition waivers may be considered taxable income. Amounts exceeding $5,250 annually are generally taxable and will be included in compensation. Employees should consult a tax advisor for guidance.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Duties are generally performed inside and not exposed to adverse conditions.
All work associated with this role must be performed within the state of Michigan.
This position is an on-campus position and doesn’t qualify for remote work
