Job Description - Graduate Assistant, Student Accessibility Services

GRADUATE ASSISTANTSHIP OVERVIEW

Elmhurst University welcomes applications for a graduate assistantship in the 2026-2027 academic year, which is renewable for the 2027-2028 academic year. This is a student position. Interested applicants will need to submit an application for admission into a degree-granting graduate program at elmhurst.edu/graduatestudies and be accepted before becoming eligible for consideration for a graduate assistant position that correlates with their area of study.

Graduate assistants at Elmhurst University may be hired for a full tuition waiver based on 20 hours of service per week. Graduate assistants also receive a stipend while they are working, paid bi-weekly, in support of their continued education. Graduate assistants participate in their assistantships during the Fall and Spring terms at minimum, and may be required to participate during January and/or Summer terms.

Eligible Graduate Programs: M.A. in Industrial/Organizational Psychology., M.Ed. in Teacher Leadership, M.S.Ed. in Special Education, M.A. in Industrial/Organizational Psychology, or Master of Business Administration.

Weekly Hours: 20

Tuition Waiver: Full

Stipend: $5,000 total per academic year, with $2,500 paid between September and December and $2,500 paid between February and May.

Terms: Fall 2026 and Spring 2027 semesters; renewable for the 2027-2028 academic year.

ASSISTANTSHIP SUMMARY

The Graduate Assistant for Student Accessibility Services is primarily responsible for providing support and referrals for students registered with the SAS Office and communicating with students, faculty and staff regarding classroom and testing accommodations. This position is supervised by the Director of Student Accessibility Services and works closely with the Learning Center team on additional projects.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates an understanding of the importance of as well as the ability to maintain student privacy in accordance with FERPA and HIPAA.
  • Prepares accommodation notification notices.
  • Communicates with students, faculty, and staff about accommodations.
  • Inputs and tracks data.
  • Schedules student exams and updates SAS Calendar throughout the academic semester.
  • Proctors exams.
  • Organizes, updates, and manages the SAS OneDrive and spreadsheets.
  • Serves as an academic coach working with students on organizational/time management skills, study tips, note-taking, goal-setting, and other strategies to foster academic success.
  • Refers students to on-campus resources (Academic Tutors, Center for Professional Excellence, Wellness Center, etc.).
  • Collaborates with campus partners.
  • Supports the daily operations of the Learning Center, including staffing the front desk, greeting students and faculty, managing the space to ensure that tutoring sessions run smoothly for both students and peer tutors, helping students schedule tutoring sessions, providing directions and sharing resources with students, cleaning the center, and restocking supplies. 
  • Assists with updating SAS policies and procedures.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to working with and service diverse populations.
  • Self-starter, reliable, and able to work independently and in teams.

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements

The essential functions of this position are primarily performed in an indoor setting with limited exposure to outdoor weather conditions. Work is often sedentary in nature and requires remaining in a stationary position for extended periods. Required abilities include speaking and hearing for in-person and virtual communication, using close and distance vision when reading documents or viewing screens, and performing tasks with repetitive fine motor skills. Work may require occasional lifting, bending, carrying, or otherwise moving objects weighing up to 15 pounds.
