Job Description

THE SELECTED CANDIDATE WILL BE OFFERED A SALARY OF $19.00 PER HOUR.

The Administration for Children’s Services (ACS) protects and promotes the safety and well-being of children and families through child welfare and juvenile justice services and community supports. ACS manages community-based supports and foster care services and provides subsidized childcare vouchers. ACS child protection staff respond to allegations of child maltreatment. In juvenile justice, ACS oversees detention, placement, and programs for youth in the community.

ACS’ Division of Administration (ADMIN) ensures that ACS has the resources and support necessary to function effectively and efficiently. ADMIN’s Occupational Health and Safety Unit (OSHU) works to promote a safe and healthy workplace for all members of the ACS community. OSHU addresses staff concerns regarding their work environment, and through training and education, focuses on identifying and eliminating hazardous conditions that could cause injury or illness in the workplace. OSHU’s mandate also includes enforcement of workplace laws and safety standards, and provides training, outreach, education, assistance, pest control management for work offices, and since 2023, for the homes of clients. OSHU is seeking is a highly motivated and detail-orientated Occupational Health & Safety Undergraduate Intern to join our team.

As an Occupational Health & Safety Intern, you will support the OSHU team in overseeing compliance with local, state, and federal occupational safety and health regulations. This internship offers a unique and excellent opportunity to hands-on experience as a member of a team responsible for meeting occupational health and safety compliance objectives.

Key Responsibilities:

- Provide support with reviewing/updating current inventory of critical OSHU supplies, and identifying items requiring restock
- In accordance with hybrid work schedules, coordinate with ACS Office Liaisons to obtain and update final employee rosters
- Assist with updating and modifying fire brigade rosters at all ACS office locations
- Help update to office chemical inventory, as needed
- Assist OSHU staff with special projects and filing, as required

Learning Outcomes:
- Gain experience in ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal occupational health and safety regulations within a government organization
- Develop skills in addressing staff concerns and identifying and eliminating hazardous conditions that could cause injury or illness in the workplace
- Enhance abilities in coordinating and executing occupational health and safety-related tasks

Section 424-A of the New York Social Services Law requires an authorized agency to inquire whether a candidate for employment with child-caring responsibilities has been the subject of a child abuse and maltreatment report.

Qualifications

As of June of the Program year the prospective intern must be a student matriculated in a college or be a recent college graduate (winter/spring term of the Program year).
NOTE: Appointment to this title is only valid for the duration of the Program, June - August each year.
