Job Description - Intern

Neuberger is seeking a highly motivated Summer Intern to support the Specialty Finance team across our New York and Redwood City offices. The intern will assist with investment analysis, portfolio monitoring, market/industry research, and deal execution workflows across specialty finance strategies (e.g., asset-based lending, consumer/SME credit, lending platforms, structured credit, and other opportunistic credit assets). This role offers hands-on exposure to credit underwriting, structuring, and portfolio management.

Key responsibilities

  • Deal / investment support

    • Build and maintain Excel-based financial models (cash flows, scenarios/sensitivities, leverage, downside cases).

    • Support credit underwriting: borrower/platform assessment, collateral review, unit economics, covenant and structure analysis.

    • Assist with investment memos, IC materials, and diligence trackers (requests, document lists, key findings).

  • Portfolio monitoring

    • Track portfolio performance metrics (e.g., delinquencies, defaults, recoveries, prepayments, advance rates, covenants).

    • Prepare recurring monitoring dashboards and flag variance vs. underwrite case.

    • Support watchlist notes and quarterly/annual review materials.

  • Market and industry research

    • Research specialty finance subsectors, regulatory developments, competitive dynamics, and funding markets.

    • Summarize key themes and implications for portfolio positioning and new opportunities.

Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing an undergraduate degree in Finance, Economics, Math/Statistics, Engineering, or a related field.

  • Strong analytical skills and comfort with financial statements, credit metrics, and cash-flow thinking.

  • Advanced Excel skills (modeling, pivots, lookups; VBA a plus). Familiarity with PowerPoint.

  • Clear written communication and the ability to synthesize complex information into concise takeaways.

  • High attention to detail, strong organization, and the ability to manage multiple workstreams under deadlines.

  • Interest in private credit / specialty finance and an eagerness to learn underwriting and structuring.

Preferred (nice-to-have)

  • Prior internship experience in investment banking, private credit, asset management, consulting, fintech, or risk.

  • Familiarity with SQL/Python, data visualization tools, or credit datasets (performance tapes).

  • Exposure to consumer credit, ABS, warehouse facilities, or structured products.

Location & work model

  • Based in New York, NY and Redwood City, CA

  • 4-5 days in office

What you’ll gain

  • Direct exposure to specialty finance investing, from diligence through monitoring.

  • Mentorship from a lean, execution-oriented team and opportunities to contribute to real-time investment decisions.

  • Development of practical skills in credit underwriting, structuring, and portfolio analytics.
