Job Description - Intern, Mechanical Engineering

About Us

Standard Subsea is building the offshore robotics company. We are developing a fleet of unmanned surface vessels and subsea vehicles to put operations capacity where it's needed, without crewed vessels, without mobilization delays, and at a fraction of the cost.

The Role

We are hiring a Mechanical Engineering Intern to work alongside our engineering team on Scout, our autonomous surface vessel and tethered ROV. You will own mechanical subsystems end to end, the same way a full-time engineer on the team does.

The work covers hull and deck hardware, ROV deployment and recovery, tether management, payload integration, and field-serviceable subsystems. You will see your parts go from CAD to fabrication to the dock to the ocean and back, often in the same week. Expect frequent water time and close work with the electrical and software teams.

Responsibilities:

  • Own mechanical subsystems on Scout, from requirements through fabrication and ocean testing

  • Develop parametric CAD models, drawings, and tolerance stacks for parts and assemblies

  • Coordinate with machine shops and vendors to fabricate parts and resolve manufacturability issues

  • Specify and select hardware, fasteners, seals, bearings, and structural materials for marine environments

  • Build test fixtures and run bench and dockside validation

  • Support ocean trials, including integration, deployment, and post-mission teardown

  • Collaborate across electrical, software, and operations to ensure designs are practical, manufacturable, and serviceable

Qualifications:

  • Pursuing a BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering, Ocean Engineering, or related field

  • Proficient in SolidWorks or equivalent parametric CAD

  • Hands-on background: machine shop, FSAE, robotics team, marine projects, or similar

  • Comfortable working from incomplete specs and finishing the thought

  • Strong fundamentals in mechanical design, materials selection, and manufacturing processes

  • Able to work on-site in Los Angeles

Bonus Points:

  • Experience with marine, subsea, or other harsh-environment hardware

  • FEA experience (structural, thermal, or modal)

  • Composites layup, machining, or welding experience

  • Hydraulic, pneumatic, or sealed pressure vessel design

  • Experience taking parts from prototype to repeatable, fieldable hardware

Logistics:

  • On-site in Los Angeles

  • Housing provided

  • Duration flexible

  • Paid
