Summary 

The National Foreign Trade Council (NFTC) seeks Interns to support its policy and program needs across our workstreams, from trade, tax and supply chain policy to economic and national security. Interns will have an opportunity to be exposed to a range of U.S. and international policy issues. Applications for the Spring semester are due December 1st and will be considered on a rolling basis after that based on the need.

About the National Foreign Trade Council

The NFTC is a recognized leader in advancing the interests of U.S. companies in international commerce. For over 100 years, we have provided our members with expertise, advocacy, and access to navigate the challenges of the global economy. Today, we advance policies in areas ranging from international trade agreements and tax treaties to tariffs, supply chain regulations, digital trade policies, and economic and national security.

We provide industry insights to policymakers in governments and in international organizations. We conduct regular meetings and briefings, develop in-depth analyses, and serve as a nimble and effective forum for companies to tackle critical and complex issues together.

We advocate for our members’ interests with the Administration and Congress, with foreign governments, and through organizations including the WTO, OECD, and United Nations. We also contribute constructively to dialogues with stakeholders, including the media, think tanks, and other industry groups, on the role of international trade and tax policies in contributing to U.S. economic growth and job creation.

The NFTC maintains an affiliated, independent 501(c)(3) educational organization, the NFTC Foundation. The Foundation houses the Global Innovation Forum, an educational effort to engage a global network of small businesses, nonprofit leaders, and government officials in exploring the role of trade policies and programs in fostering resilience and inclusive growth.

What You Will Do 

Learn about the intersection of global business and public policy.  An intern's responsibilities may include –

• Supporting NFTC's policy functions, potentially including its National Security initiative, Supply Chain Working Group, International Tax Committee and International Trade Committee, and the Global Innovation Forum's work to engage startups and small businesses;


• Conducting research and assisting staff in drafting and editing materials;


• Summarizing NFTC’s meetings and activities for distribution to its network;


• Preparing for and helping to execute meetings, conferences and forums;


• Attending events to report on developments pertaining to NFTC’s priorities at think tanks, Congressional hearings, or with the diplomatic and policy communities;


• Contributing to NFTC’s communications and membership functions, potentially including researching, drafting and editing content for NFTC’s web properties, press releases, and social media accounts, assisting with media outreach and helping to manage contacts and databases; and


• Executing other duties as assigned.

Work Schedule

Interns are expected to follow a hybrid work format that combines time in NFTC's office in downtown Washington, DC, with working from home.

Qualifications 

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.


• A background or interest in international tax, trade policy, or global business.


• Attention to detail, excellent organizational and time management skills, and an ability to plan, prioritize and execute multiple assignments.


• Familiarity with Google Docs/Sheets and Microsoft Word/Excel, WordPress, and social media tools.


• Preference will be given to graduate students with undergraduate degrees in policy, business, international relations, or a related discipline.


• A positive and professional attitude and a willingness to learn and be mentored.
