MDT Internship Program provides an opportunity to immerse yourself in the world of problem solving, innovation and teamwork. Interns engage in Montana’s transportation projects that have a direct impact on Montana’s traveling public! Interns will collaborate with area experts and gain invaluable hands-on experience. Our internships focus on training and integrating the interns into our current workforce of over 2,000 people across Montana who are all providing a vital role to ensure everyone arrives at their destination safely.
Recruiting for one Mechanic Intern. Student is required to be currently attending MSU Northern to be hired from this posting; intern will work out of the MDT Havre shop for the fall of 2026 (October- December). Intern will work variable hours around their class schedule.
Duties:
Assist with maintenance and repair of machinery & mechanical equipment (automobiles, light and heavy-duty trucks, and construction equipment)
Adjust, diagnose, and replace nonfunctional parts of devices and control instruments
Replace worn or defective parts
Repair and replace tires on vehicles and equipment
Lubricate and clean parts
Perform some minor repairs without Supervision
Keep electronic records of time and materials, service equipment, and maintains preventive maintenance service records
Utilizes Equipment Vehicle Maintenance Management System (EVMMS) to process work orders and update vehicle repair records
Cleans shop area, including general janitorial work, grounds and building maintenance, and snow removal
Tools & Equipment:
Basic hand tools
Operational knowledge of parts washer, high pressure washer, forklift, pickup, tire tools, vehicle parts, measuring gauges and instruments, computers, electronic and other diagnostic equipment
Physical Demands:
Must be able to perform physical activity in lifting (greater than 50 pounds), carrying, and/or operating tools, equipment, and materials

Oct – Dec 2026
Required Education and Experience:
· Student must be currently enrolled and attending MSU Northern studying mechanics, machining, welding or fabrication. Student required to have 30 minimum credit hours by the end of fall semester 2026.
