Job Description - Member Outreach Intern - Tulare

Summary: 


The Member Outreach Intern is a key part of our organizing team for engaging young activists ages 18-24 in the Central Valley to build power at the city, county, and state levels. This position will work 10 hours weekly to execute membership outreach and recruitment strategies.  In addition, the Member Outreach Intern will assist and plan events, including support agenda planning and meeting facilitation, and train members and volunteers on issues and actions needed to advance power building in the Central Valley. Working under the supervision of the Senior Membership Organizer, the person in this role must have some applicable experience in organizing Gen Zs and Millennials. While employed by Power California, this position mainly carries out the work for Power California 501(c)3 and its sibling 501(c)(4) nonprofit, PowerCA Action.



Member Outreach Coordination   (40% of time)



  • Utilizes web-based technology to contact young Californians via peer-to-peer texting,  phone calls, email, and relational organizing 

  • Works 4-hour sessions to recruit and train young Californians in their region through  direct canvassing and presentations at community events 

  • Engages in conversations with  peers in a persuasive, professional manner  

  • Conducts 1:1s with potential members to bring them into our organizing work



Event Planning   (30 % of time)



  • Assist with planning and executing cultural activities and membership events in person. This could include supporting the development of agendas and facilitating in-person and virtual events. 

  • Supports administrative work, including, but not limited to, taking notes during key meetings and confirming attendees, as assigned



Administrative   (10% of time) 



  • Reports outreach progress every week to lead staff, entering and updating outreach data in spreadsheets when needed 

  • Carries out other administrative tasks as assigned 

  • Submits all required paperwork in a timely and accurate manner

  • Attend weekly 1hr meeting with the Senior Membership Organizer



Political Development    (20% of time) 



  • Attend weekly 2hr political and skill development sessions with all interns and Power CA staff.



Minimum Qualifications and Experience:



  • Able to work 10 hours a week, including some evenings and weekends as necessary. 

  • Works in good faith to support the overall stability and effectiveness of the organization 

  • Ability to effectively course-correct to meet membership recruitment and presentation goals

  • Demonstrated success in  outreach

  • Excellent time management and organization; works independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment with shifting timelines. 

  • Experience working/partnering with young people of color, low-income, immigrants, and refugees, and/or LGBTQIA+ communities 

  • Strong computer literacy, including experience in the Microsoft suite and Google Docs

  • Ability to consistently act and interact with integrity, compassion, and openness to feedback

  • Excellent ability to communicate with people at all levels and from various backgrounds

  • Has a cell phone with an adequate data plan and a home internet connection with sufficient speed

  • Must have reliable, timely means of transportation



Preferred Qualifications and Experience:



  • Familiarity with grassroots organizing and advocacy engagement techniques a plus

  • Bilingual or multilingual with English-Spanish skills a plus 

  • Have the ability to drive; valid California driver’s license and, if driving own car, proof of  adequate insurance coverage required 



Physical Requirements and Environmental Conditions:

  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position, at a desk or similar, 40% of the time. Time spent in stationary location includes operating a computer and relevant peripherals and communicating via phone

  • Regularly required by the duties of this job to move, ascend and descend, remain stationary, position oneself to access and operate machines and/or equipment and supplies, communicate, exchange information and observe details at close and medium range within work surroundings.

  • Regularly/occasionally moves up to 30 pounds. Typically involves moving campaign material/event set-up material/PPE/other materials as needed.




Travel Requirements:  Varies by campaign season; occasional travel during heavy seasons, approximately seven months of the year.
