Job Description - Nurse Intern - Critical Care Fellowship

Under the supervision of a Registered Nurse, licensed independent practitioner, or manager, the Nurse Intern assists with a variety of direct and indirect patient care activities, with an emphasis on supporting care in high-acuity and critical care environments. Direct activities may include assisting with activities of daily living, comfort measures, safety monitoring, nutritional support, and selected diagnostic and therapeutic interventions for critically ill patients as directed. Indirect patient care activities include maintaining a clean and safe environment, performing disinfection, and ensuring adequate inventory of supplies and equipment essential for critical care delivery. The Nurse Intern also participates in professional development opportunities, including education, training, and shadow experiences, to enhance clinical knowledge, skills, and exposure to critical care practice.

Essential Job Statements

Provides direct and indirect patient care under RN supervision, including assistance with daily living and perioperative tasks. Follows care plans and immediately reports any safety concerns. 

Adheres to all hospital, regulatory, and safety standards to maintain a safe care environment. Follows infection control and safety protocols consistently. 

Accurately documents care and communicates patient needs and concerns to the healthcare team. Escalates issues appropriately to ensure safe, effective care. 

Demonstrates professionalism by actively identifying learning needs, using available resources, and complying with organizational policies. Communicates effectively, collaborates with team members, and seeks support when needed to resolve challenges. 

Demonstrates accountability in the appropriate and cost-effective use of organizational resources. Supports responsible stewardship of supplies, equipment, and time. 

Participates in ongoing education to support personal development and patient/family learning needs. Completes required training and contributes to a learning environment that supports colleagues and peers. 

Supports team and departmental goals by performing assigned duties and participating in special projects as needed. Demonstrates flexibility and adaptability in meeting changing unit and patient care needs. 

Patient Population: Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide equitable care appropriate to the age of the patients served on their assigned unitDemonstrates knowledge and related competencies of the principles of growth and development of the life span and possesses the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interprets the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to their age, specific needs and to provide the equitable care needed as described in departmental policies and procedures. Adults (18-64 years), Geriatrics (65 years and older) 

Employment Qualifications 

Education Required: VCU/MCV BSN students: Completion of sophomore year, Nursing 201, 202, 261

Certification Required: AHA BLS HCP Certification or equivalent

Working Conditions: Periods of high stress and fluctuating workloads may occur. May be exposed to physical altercations and verbal abuse. May be  to use physical restraints. May be exposed to high noise levels and bright lights. May be exposed to limited hazardous substances or body fluids. * 

May be exposed to human blood and other potentially infectious materials. *  May have periods of constant interruptions. 

* Individuals in this position are required to exercise universal precautions, use personal protective equipment and devices, and learn the policies concerning infection control.
