Title:  Nurse Technician - Acute Care (Per Diem)

FTE:  Per Diem

Schedule: 12-hour day/night shifts, 6:45 AM/PM - 7:15 PM/AM

Weekend Rotation:  n/a

POSITION SUMMARY

The Student Nurse Technician is a nursing student who is actively enrolled in a board approved school of professional nursing program, is in their final year prior to graduation or graduated from such program and does not hold a temporary permit, or who has been unsuccessful on the nursing licensure exam and is retaking the exam.  Student Nurse Technicians may only hold this title for up 9 months prior to their date of graduation and up to 3 months following their date of graduation. 

This position performs support services, direct and indirect patient care, organizes and coordinates efficient delivery of nursing care under the *direct supervision of the Registered Nurse. The Student Nurse Technician may perform tasks as long as they are commensurate with educational preparation and demonstrated competencies from the student’s school of professional nursing, as well as being observed and signed off by an SPH Preceptor. The Student Nurse Technician can perform delegated CNA tasks from the RN without direct supervision from the RN. The Student Nurse Technician can delegate tasks to the CNA in collaboration with the supervising RN.

*Direct supervision is defined as immediately available to continually coordinate, direct, and inspect the practice of the Student Nurse Technician. 

POSITION TECHNICAL RESPONSIBILITIES

UNDER *DIRECT SUPERVISION OF THE RN POSITION TECHNICAL RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

  • Follow the multidisciplinary plan of care to address patient needs.

  • Assist in preparation or alteration of plan of care.

  • Administer medications and IV therapy, knowing use, dosage, possible side effects, etc.

  • Change dressings, inserts catheters, does range of motion and heat/cold therapies, and monitors blood glucose.

  • Recognize changes in signs and symptoms and promptly reports patient’s condition to the RN.

  • Document care provided in the electronic medical record.

  • Monitor patient labs.

  • Communicate with other nurses, doctors, and other disciplines regarding patient.

  • Assist in the provision of patient/family education.

  • Protect patients' rights and privacy by following HIPPA and SPH Policies and practices.

  • Perform or assist with procedures per approved unit policy and procedure.

  • Observe and record significant condition changes and/or any reactions for patients.  In a timely manner, notifies supervisor or physician of changes in patient's condition, reactions to drugs, treatment, and/or significant incidents.

  • Administer medications, including IV therapy effectively, as evidenced by lack of medication errors. 

  • Ensure proper handling of specimens.

  • Safely cares for multiple patients.  Maintains a safe environment for patients and uses safety precautions appropriately.

  • Initiate patient/family education plan and discharge needs according to the individualized needs of the patient/family, as prescribed by physician and/or hospital polic

  • Perform other duties assigned by supervising RN.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Education:

  • Required: Active enrollment in a board-approved school of professional nursing program in their final year prior to graduation OR has graduated from such program but does not hold a temporary permit, OR has graduated, but is unsuccessful on the nursing licensure exam and is retaking the exam. Must maintain good standing in their nursing schooling throughout employment (class grade of a C or higher). 

  • Preferred: Successful completion of Acute Care clinical course.

Licenses and Registrations:

  • Required: Current State of Wisconsin Registered Nurse license is required within 90 calendar days from date of graduation. 

  • Preferred: None

Certification(s):

  • Required: Basic Life Support (BLS) required upon hire.

  • Preferred: None
