Job Description - Ocean Scholar Intern

Job Summary


Loggerhead Marinelife Center (LMC) is proud to offer the Ocean Scholars Program, a 10-week paid summer internshipdesigned for high school students ages 15–18 residing in Palm Beach or Martin Counties. This immersive experience offers selected interns a hands-on role in marine science education, sea turtle rehabilitation, and ocean conservation. Interns will support LMC’s Education Department by assisting with the Junior Marine Biologist summer camp, engaging guests in meaningful discussions about sea turtle and ocean conservation, and participating in field activities. Interns will work alongside LMC’s expert staff and gain direct exposure to the center’s outdoor sea turtle hospital and conservation programs.


Interns will be expected to effectively communicate scientific information to diverse audiences, work as part of a team, and demonstrate professionalism in all guest and staff interactions. This internship is both an educational experience and an opportunity to make a positive environmental impact.


Core Responsibilities


●      Assist LMC educators with Junior Marine Biologist summer camp programs (ages 6–13)


●      Engage guests and share sea turtle conservation messaging in exhibits and during educational programs


●      Participate in career-readiness rotations with LMC staff


●      Observe and support daily operations within the sea turtle hospital and rehabilitation areas


●      Communicate effectively with the public using professional and age-appropriate language


●      Represent LMC and the Ocean Scholars Program with a positive and welcoming attitude


●      Adhere to safety protocols and LMC guidelines at all times


●      Attend required training and scheduled team meetings


●      Other duties as assigned


 


Required Skills, Knowledge, and Experience


▪       Must be 15–18 years of age and a resident of Palm Beach or Martin County


▪       Must be available for mandatory training on June 1, 2025, from 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM


▪       Must be available to work June 2 – August 8, 2025


▪       Comfortable working outdoors in Florida summer conditions


▪       Strong interest in marine science, education, or environmental conservation


▪       Reliable, responsible, and able to work independently and as part of a team


▪       Excellent verbal communication and interpersonal skills


▪       Willingness to work with children and guests of all ages


▪       Schedules may include one weekend day per week


 


Pay Range: $17.00/hour
 Positions Available: Part-Time (24 hours/week) or Full-Time (40 hours/week)
 Number of Positions: 5

Annually we reach 900,000 guests with our transformational STEM education programs and partner with nearly 200 organizations across six continents and 16 countries in ocean conservation. In 2022, we opened our new 27,500 square-foot campus expanding our exhibition, education, convening space, and medical facilities and increasing our regional economic impact.

Essential functions of this position include ability to read and visually verify information in a variety of formats (e.g., small print), visually inspect tools, equipment, or machines (e.g., to identify defects), move at a speed required to respond to work situations (e.g., run, walk, jog), stand, sit, or walk for an extended period of time or for an entire work shift, move, lift, carry, push, pull, and place objects weighing less than or equal to 30 pounds without assistance and objects weighing in excess of 50 pounds with assistance, move over sloping, uneven, or slippery surfaces as well as up and down stairs and/or service ramps, reach overhead and below the knees, including bending, twisting, pulling, and stooping, continual use of manual dexterity and gross motor skills with frequent use of bi-manual dexterity and fine motor skills, perform other reasonable job duties as requested by Supervisors. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Must pass a ‘level 2’ background screening through The Clearinghouse. The Clearinghouse provides a single data source administered by the Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA) for background screening results for persons screened for employment or licensure that provide services to children, the elderly and disabled individuals.


 


Notes


This recruitment may be used to select candidates for additional open positions. It is our policy that all team members, including newly hired, transferred, and promoted team members, will be carefully monitored and evaluated for an initial introductory 3 month period on the job. After satisfactory completion of the introductory evaluation, such team members will be evaluated on an annual basis.
