About Us

The NC Department of Administration is the business manager for North Carolina state government. The department oversees Government Operations such as building construction, purchasing and contracting for goods and services, maintaining facilities, managing state vehicles, acquiring and disposing of real property, and operating auxiliary services such as courier mail delivery and the sale of state and federal surplus property. Additionally, the department manages many of the state's advocacy programs that provide assistance and services to diverse segments of the state's population that have been traditionally underserved.

Job Duties:  The intern will focus on processing and describing individual interviews and collections for the School Integration and Desegregation Oral History Project and Conversations in Black (Greensboro Oral History Project). The intern will assist in digital access, transcription, metadata work, and in the creation of a finding aid, all enhancing accessibility for these interviews and collections. 

Major Task to be Performed:   


The intern will work to add the interviews from both collections to the Internet Archives and make them accessible on North Carolina Digital Collections. This work includes uploading the interview files to the online platform, and creating descriptive metadata using institutional guidelines,and local  standards. The intern will be providing summary information on the individual interview level as well as the project level.    

• The intern will assist in finding aid creation for the two previously mentioned oral history projects. 
• The intern will assist in logging, indexing, and transcribing oral histories. 
• Social media work will be expected: The intern will be asked to help create podcast episode ideas to highlight the oral history collection for Connecting the Docs, the State Archives’ podcast. The intern will also be expected to write blog posts for the Archives’ blog, History For All the People, and accompanying content for Twitter and Facebook. 

Final Product or Outcome Anticipated: The creation of two finding aids, one for each project. At least three completed transcriptions. One podcast episode. The facilitation of oral history uploads into the digital collection.

Academic Majors Desired:    Bachelor's degree in history, public history, communications or similar, minimum; Master's in public history, library science, or similar, preferred.

 

2026 State of North Carolina Internship Period: Monday, May 18 – Friday, July 24, 2026

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies:

The successful candidate will have strong written and verbal communication skills to effectively describe collections to facilitate accessibility. Knowledge of North Carolina history a plus. The intern will gain the knowledge of conducting and processing oral history collections, in all phases, from working with donors and creating project ideas to conducting interviews to processing, transcribing, and accessioning collections. The intern will also be exposed to working with community members to accession their interviews into the Archives as well as help with oral history trainings. Furthermore, the intern will learn how to accurately describe and make interviews accessible for researchers and interested parties. In addition to working with oral history collections, the oral history intern will interact with other units within Special Collections and the Division of Archives and Records, generally, in the creation of oral histories and for the podcast and other outreach opportunities. This opportunity uniquely sits at the intersection of the creativity of making history and the scientific work of archiving materials, and the intern will be exposed to both facets of the job. 

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
  • An applicant must be a permanent North Carolina resident attending a college, university, law school, community college or technical institute in North Carolina or a North Carolina resident attending an equivalent institution out of state. 
  • Applicants must carry a 2.5 or greater overall grade point average on a 4.0 scale.
  • Applicant must be a high school graduate and at least 18 years old by January 1, 2026.
  • Applicants must be continuing their education in the fall following their participation in the program.
  • To qualify for a law internship, applicants must have completed at least one year of law school before the beginning of the internship, unless other majors are listed.
  • Students having previously held paid internships with this program are not eligible to apply.
  • Applicants must be willing and able to work full-time for the entire 10-week internship. Applicants must be able to provide legal proof of identity and work authorization within three working days of employment.

This position will close at 11:59 p.m. the night before the end date.
